Macronutrients are carbohydrate, fat, and protein.

Macronutrients are the ones that contribute calories to your diet, such as fat, carbohydrates, and protein. They provide the building blocks of the body. Micronutrients are things like vitamins and minerals that you need in small amounts.

oh...so when people say "i'm working on my macros", it means they're trying to make sure they hit the right ratio of fats, carbs and protein? how do you know what the right ratios are?

Yes, that's what it means. As for the right ratios, there are several schools of thought, and it seems like what works best varies by individual.

The take home message is that the different macronutrients (and they can be broken down further into different types) are all important to the human body. They have purposes.
