Going on holiday

Hey everyone,
So at the end on May (I know it's still a while away) myself and a friend are going over to America to visit some friends, we are at University and the people we are seeing all studied over here last year on an exchange so we decided it would be good to go over and catch up with them!
My question is, as we know holidays usually involve eating badly and out a lot of the time, we've already decided that since we will be staying at our friends' homes with their families we won't eat out too often and will more than likely cook our own meals or eat with the families we stay with (obviously we will offer payment and not just assume we can do this). However we will be eating out a few times because we want to try some of the things available, but my question is what restaurants or food options are there that offer healthier options, or at least smaller sized portions (I know I can doggy bag almost anything so I will bare that in mind)?
If anybody has any suggestions on places we can go that would be great and preferably restaurants that are found all over because we will be travelling a lot so small local place recommendations probably won't be as helpful as we are not too sure where we will be visiting as of yet!
Thanks to anyone who offers any ideas
