Has anyone else experienced weight gain while they were sick? Last Tuesday I weighed in at 174lbs, and today I got on the scale before getting a shower and I was 177/176.

Is my body holding onto extra water to fight my cold?

  • Good question that I would even like to know? I just had surgery my tonsils removed and I am not really gaining weight but, I am not losing it ether. I am on a lot of fluids and have been drinking slim-fast and boost two to three times a day to keep my proteins levels good The down fall is I am getting a lot of sugar. Why am I not losing anymore weigh ? I was getting in 1300 calories a day Now I am getting around 900 to 1,200 a day. I am worried my metabolism is in a stalling mode or it might be bad time with a Pplateau . Help ! I am worried If I don't know how can I fix the problem :-) ?

I usually gain weight if I'm ill, mostly because I comfort eat, make bad choices and snack much more often than if I'm run off my feet at work all day long....
  • Good question. I am suffering with a bad cold just now and have spent most of today in bed. I don't want anything to eat but have just been having small slices of toast for breakfast and lunch - lunch at 3pm. I have just had a couple of crispreads with some lean ham and a couple of peach halves and water to drink. The calories have added up to about 800 - which is half my daily allowance but I bet anything that when I get on the scales I will have gained weight.
  • I'm not an expert, but I would think that your body would retain water when you are sick. The nasal tissues swell and so can your throat etc. I have experienced this myself. The nice thing is that I also usually get a nice "whoosh" of weight loss after I recover.

I am healing from an injury right now and am eating at maintenance. I believe it is important to feed your body when it is working so hard to fix itself after injury or surgery.

@April, your body is still healing and you probably have more swelling than you realize. That being said, if you can manage to eat more you probably should. I know your throat is probably sore still, but can you get some warm soup (not hot) or some juice to raise your calorie level a little? I don't think you're in starvation mode or anything, but like I said you are healing and that takes energy.

Thanks all. I assume it is water weight.
