Losing fat v losing muscle

Hi there,
I'm a bit confused as how to your body burns fat instead of burning muscle. I keep on hearing that if you don't eat enough calories and if you're hungry then your body will burn muscle. But on the same hand, you need to have a calorie deficit to burn fat. Is it about balance - eating less but not too little. If you eat too little then you'll burn muscle, but if you eat just a little less then you'll burn fat??
If anyone could shed some light, it would be great!

However, please keep in mind that you don't actually "burn" muscle. You're body isn't going to eat it off your bones. It's a misnomer.0 -
Higher protein in your diet will help your body keep more muscle, when loosing weight there will be a bit of muscle loss along with the fat.0
