Memoirs of a breakfast hater.

Yup, that's me. I am totally not a breakfast eater. At all. Therefore, I (not on purpose) have most of my calories at night. I started worrying a bit about that. So I did some research. Seems most people say that that's a bad bad thing....even going as far as saying breakfast should be your highest calorie meal of the day. I simply can't do THAT...I would be useless the rest of the day...and working out? FORGET IT! So I am trying something different. Even though I can't really enjoy much more than coffee in the mornings...I'm ate breakfast...today. A poached egg on whole wheat toast and a little bit of CBINB. Not bad...light...not overly filling...with a dash of protein. This is my attempt at spreading my calories evenly and see if it helps the weight loss. This will be hard since dinner in my house has to please 2 kids and a picky husband and I simply don't have the grocery budget to purchase separate things for just myself. Wish me luck?

...and toss in some tips and tricks for me??

Good job at giving breakfast a shot. I don't have many tips for you because I am a breakfast LOVER. As my boyfriend and I were washing up the dinner dishes last night I said "I can't wait for breakfast!" and I totally meant it. He thinks I am a little nuts.

I didn't eat breakfast regularly in high school or even most of college, but I found that once I started, there was no going back. Now, if I don't have food within 30 minutes of waking, I will be CRANKY. I wake up famished.

For breakfast this morning I had the left overs from last nights mexican dinner. Jalepenos and onions are definately weird at 8am. Is it the food you don't like, or do you just not feel hungry until later in the day? I used to be able to hold off on eatting until around noon. Once I started forceing myself to eat breakfast for a few weeks my body started getting hungry first thing in the morning because it was expecting to get fed.

I hear ya, I don't care for food in the morning either. So what? It doesn't matter when you eat, it really doesn't. Calories in, calories out. So skip the breakfast and have a great lunch.

I tend to agree. Some people need it, some people don't. When I wasn't a breakfast eater, I was cranky and spacey in the mornings and then I would eat a whole heap of calories from about 4 pm - midnight. It works better for me to space things out throughout the day. For other people, they can not eat until midmorning or noon and be totally reasonable in their food choices. I think you have to find what works for you. So, to the OP, I say congrats for trying to mix things up and find out what will work best in your life.

    @kaitlinj - I agree with your BF...you ARE nuts! ;)

@svey9480 - Honestly, I have never been a breakfast eater. It started when I was in grade school. It frustrated my mom to no end. I guess that's another thing she knew better than I. ;) LOL. I like the food. It's good food and I enjoy it...it's just that it feels so heavy on my stomach all day and makes me sleepy. Especially oatmeal, cereal and things like pancakes. I'm hoping just a light "snack" type breakfast will jump start my metabolism for the day and help me space my calories better.

Breakfast is not my favorite meal, either. I am a big dinner person - I looooove dinner! I love everything about it - to me it is a celebration of completing a long day of hard work and signifies the changeover to relaxation and fun times. BUT I work out in the morning so I have to eat breakfast....you do get used to it, and like previous poster said, it doesn't have to be breakfast food. In fact, you can just have a light snack with your coffee and another light snack 2 hours later, rather than one 300-400 calorie breakfast at one time. I have also learned that when I don't eat breakfast, even on my workout days, I am ravenous by lunchtime and eat way too many calories at that time. Another plus to eating breakfast is that by eating small amounts at regular intervals, you stay satiated, therefore you get fewer hunger pangs which means less snacking/indulging during the day. It supposedly keeps your blood sugars stable too, and helps keep your metabolism regular. As for dinner, go ahead and make what you normally make, just reduce the amount that you feed yourself.

That was my initial thought too but I'd like to make sure I'm not screwing myself out of more efficient weight loss. ya know? Considering I have not been a breakfast eater since I was a child....and have always struggled with my weight...I kind of want to test and make sure that this quirk of mine isn't part of the problem.

@xonophone - So far, that's kind of what I have been doing....or sneaking in dinners that are not OBVIOUSLY healthy. I've tricked my husband more than once LOL. Dinner for us too is part of our family time...it's coming together enjoying a meal.

I used to NEVER eat breakfast (for years and years)...wasn't hungry until later. That was killing my metabolism. I've been working with a nutrition coach and they insisted upon me changing that. Now I've forced myself to eat breakfast for the past 2.5 months and don't eat nearly as much as I used to at night. Now that my body has gotten used to this different pattern, it expects food in the mornings and it is much easier to pack it in that early. I usually have a protein shake since it is so quick, easy and I don't have to chew it so it doesn't seem as much of a burden, and then I eat something handheld like a bagel or muffin that I can eat in the car so I don't have to get up earlier to eat bkfst. It was a struggle to change my ways, but well worth it in the long run. Now I'm burning off those calories as fuel instead of attacking my muscle and ruining my metabolism in the mornings. I used to think it didn't matter what time of day you ate also, but boy was I wrong!

Eat something in the morning...anything is better than nothing.

i'm not a fan of breakfast foods. i don't mind eating in the morning, although i'd rather wait until at least 2-3 hours after i've been awake. but there's no way i'm eating typical American "breakfast". The other day our church hosted a breakfast for the community. They advertised all the foods we'd be serving and people were getting excited and what not, talking about "ham! bacon! sausage! eggs! gravy! biscuits! pancakes! grits!" yeah... out of that entire list of foods i will only eat the biscuits. occasionally a pancake, but usually if i have pancakes it's about 11:00 at night. :)

Some days I just don't feel like eating in the mornings too. If you can get up early enough just give yourself about an hr (no more) and re-evaluate how you feel. Usually I'll have a glass of water and then a cup of coffee(black) and then get online and putter around a while. Usually 30 to 40 min later I go in and have breakfast. But even then sometimes I don't feel like eating much but I know I need to eat something before work so I just eat a string cheese stick. It's not much but its fairly balanced (carbs, protein, fat). But whatever you do, don't sweat it.

The things you've listed that feel heavy on your stomach - ARE. They're all carb foods...so do what you did this morning. Make some eggs. Even having just a boiled egg and maybe some yogurt. Start small and soon, like a couple of the girls have said, your body will want and be okay with it. My sister used to avoid breakfast because it made her sick. Now she eats it everyday.

Good options for breakfast if you're going light are fruit. I love having a banana and a cup of another fruit with my cereal or eggs. Canteloupe is great in the morning, pretty cheap, and if you divide it all at once, you can get a good week and a half or two weeks out of it, depending on how many days you're eating it (I did 2 work weeks, so 10 days). Bananas are pretty filling, are beneficial for MANY things in our bodies and at their biggest, about 110 calories. Good luck with breakfast!! I'm like kaitlinj, I could eat breakfast every meal of the day. I just love it!

i think i hate breakfast because it is my favorite. i'll refrain from listing them but we all know that breakfast is generally filled with sweet, simple carb, lots of fat, things. all those things taste amazing, but they're all so bad. so with out those, breakfast just isn't the same, i have a really hard time making a healthy breakfast not boring. if it's plain and bland, i just can't eat it.

Oh yes, I LOVE tricking my husband into eating a meal that he doesn't realize is healthy! LOL another trick I will do, which isn't really a trick, is to portion out my serving of food first, which is prepared healthfully, and then just add a little extra cheese, butter (which is now Smart Balance, haven't used butter in years), salt, or whatever to his food, to make it more palatable for him. Dinner is important family time, so anyway you can think to make it less of a temptation for you, the better.
