Heart Rate Monitor Help

Was so excited to finally get an accurate count on calories burned, and now I'm just disappointed.
Got a Timex HRM today, set it to my weight, etc, and then hit the trail. It seemed to work great, moderate readings during moderate work, high readings during high output. In review it had recorded my high HR correctly, the the averages seemed more or less right.
But then I got to calories and it read nearly 2300 for 2.5 hours hiking/walking/(very little)jogging. I just can't believe that is accurate.
What am I missing?

Well I'm not really sure but I can give you a reference point When I do 60 minutes of cardio (fairly intense, HR gets up to the 165-171 range for a good portion) I burn roughly 620-650 calories. Obviously weight/age will make that number vary but I hope that at least helps.0
