Feel like I'm getting nowhere....

So I'm on week five of the Jillian Michael's Body Revolution. So far I've only lost about 5-6 pounds. I have tried cutting down to the 1200 calorie limit but after that hard workout I'm starving! It's getting easier to eat less but I feel disappointed and like there's no point to this HARD exercise routine. I've read posts where people have lost like 15 pounds a month! UGH! So frustrated! Hitting a wall and it's depressing.

You may have hit a plateau. Try revving your calories to 100-200 more.

Sounds like you're losing about a pound a week which is excellent! Nothing to be disappointed with. You can't compare your losses to others' though - everyone is different, and we won't all lose the same or at the same pace.

How much are you trying to lose? What's your daily calorie goal, and do you eat back exercise cals?

I definitely wouldn't go down to 1200 - it's the bare minimum "standard" for women, but not enough for most of us, especially if you're active at all.

Did you take your measurements before you started? If not, take them asap. You may be losing inches instead of pounds. I haven't lost a pound in three weeks but I have lost an inch in my waist.
Also, 1200 calories is really hard to maintain especially if you're making yourself hungrier by working out hard. Are you eating back your exercise calories? I know it seems counterproductive but you'll feel better after eating more and you don't want to net less than 1200 calories. You'll probably start seeing better results with eating more, too.

I am not sure I understand. Why are you disappointed that you're losing a pound a week?
  • Because most people lose way more than that.
  • Yes please! Advice is needed and appreciated!

Comparison is the thief of joy. I've found that I can't even compare myself to myself! A few years back I was up to 215 lbs. I cut down to 1200 calories and was working out 4-5 times a week for an hour. I was dropping pounds left and right. I lost about 35 lbs in 3 months. I got burned out and decided to maintain for a while. Well, three years passed and I slowly put back on some pounds. I got started again in January at 192 and quickly lost the usual water weight. Then...nothing. 1200 calories wasn't working for me. I had to start eating more. So while other people have been dropping 2 lbs a week I haven't been losing anything! BUT, I did start taking my measurements. In the past three weeks since I started eating more I haven't lost any weight but I have lost an inch in my waist and I can see that my body is changing shape. It does me no good to compare myself to others. What difference does it make what their results are? They're not my results so what do I care? All I can do is the best I can do in a healthy way and accept and be proud of my results.

What do you think about eating back your exercise calories?

I do feel the difference in my muscles and endurance, and my waist, arms and thighs are a bit smaller. I haven't taken measurements but I can see and feel a bit of a difference.I guess I went into the program expecting to lose more than I have and it's throwing me off.
As far as eating back calories goes, it really depends on the day. Some days I break even of my limit, some days I'm below and other days I'm over. I find it especially hard about a week from my period because then I'm starving and want to eat the worst junk food.

I really understand how it feels to not get the big results that we expect. Especially after working so hard. But don't give up. Some progress is better than no progress, right? Just keep moving towards your goal. My advice is to eat back some or all of your exercise calories and eat a bit more on days when you don't work out. 1200 calories will make you crazy. My 2nd piece of advice would be do a search for PMS in the forums. It will make you feel better to know that we all have crazy cravings during TOM. Let yourself have brownies or chips if you want it. A couple of days of going over your calories won't matter. You can still be successful if you pig out a couple of times a month. But you may not be successful if you don't fuel your body enough. So think about eating more, OK?

Try reading this link and give it some thought. This is what I'm working towards doing and it's so much easier than eating 1200 calories. This makes weight loss so doable.

Its either almost all water weight, a bit muscle loss, or they were in much worse shape than you before. No one is going to lose 15lbs of fat in a month. Don't let the scale discourage you, it's very misleading. Gauge your progress with the mirror, measuring tape, and your physical performance.

    How often are you eating?

Try consuming ~100-150 calories every 90 minutes. I was about as lethargic as they come, and it only took about 2 weeks to send my metabolism into ludicrous-speed.

Make sure you're eating plenty of protein also. Try 1g of protein for every pound of lean muscle you have (generic benchmark, you may want to Google more specific goals based on your body type and goals).

You need to eat more, and how much do you have to lose? 1 lb a week is reasonable, 2 lbs is not unless you are morbidly obese....which it doesn't look like you are.

    I eat 1500-1700 calories per day I am 5'2 158 lbs.

It could be that you are eatting too little to support all that you are doing excercise wise... and you put your body into starvation mode. Have you tried a healthy fat meal? You would be amazed the difference healthy fats make! They actually tell your body to start burning the bad stuff :) and keep in mind that muscle does weigh more then fat. I bet you have accomplished ALOT and it sounds like you are sure working hard! Don't lose faith :) it will happen! You will see! Good for you for sticking to it. You are kind of inspiring me today! So thanks for that!

I haven't lost a pound on 30 day shred, but I can tell I'm a lot stronger. It's not all about poundage. A pound a week is seriously good, though. The less you have to lose, the slower you'll lose. And if you're eating fairly low, that'll slow your weight loss, too.

Hey hun, 1200 calories a day is low if you workout and burn at least 600 calories a day. What I've learned from reading posts and my friends is that you have to eat back some of your exercise calories. If you don't eat enough your body goes into starvation mode and will store fat because it doesn't know when you are giong to feed it again. So I recommend having more small healthy snacks durning the day. Feed your body with healthy fulfilling food and then you will start to see changes. Take a tape to your waist or set aside some clothing you can't fit into right now and I bet in a week or so you will see the difference! 1200 calories a day is low if you workout and burn at least 600 calories a day. Good luck and 1 lb a week isn't a bad thing!!!
