Maybe this is a stupid question, but I was just wondering the benefits of using protein powders (like in shakes, smoothies, etc) or why you use them. I seem to be always over on my daily protein values as it is.

Well, first off you need protein to repair body cells, repair & build muscles, its a source of energy & controls many important body processes related to metabolism. It is hard to get protein sources that contain all the essential amino acids from just food (aka "complete proteins"). So, whey protein powder is a good choice for getting your protein b/c it contains many/most/all of these amino acids. It is also great for vegetarians, those that are lactose intolerant, etc . Protein needs differ from person to person based on health, activity level, age, etc. but I need way more protein than MFP suggests. I also don't eat red meat, pork or seafood. Soooo protein powder is a life saver for me personally!! I add it to oatmeal, post workout shakes, to greek yogurt.....

there's no point in using them if you are getting your protein straight from the source of course!
