Body Fat Scales - Are they for real?

What's the deal on these scales that measure your body fat/muscle etc with waves. I have one.. but does it just do the calculations on what you input, or can it really tell what your percentages are?

  • I just got one of these scales. I haven't figured out how to set it up yet. So far I only use it to get my weight.

Google "How bioimpedence scales work". They aren't perfectly accurate, but they provide feedback and create a baseline.

I just asked a similar question and was told bf calipers are the way to go. Cheaper and more reliable. I finished checking them out online. Most reviews said they were within 1% accurate. I found some on amazon for about $8. GNC has them too, but they're more expensive. I have a scale that measures body fat and the reading just didn't make sense based on my bmi.

While true that they are more accurate it really depends on the person doing the reading being really experienced at doing it properly. If you don't know what you are doing they can be pretty inaccurate as well...

    This ^^

If your scale is a recent model and you use it correctly, it's likely as accurate as calipers. Based on comparison with pictures I found online of women with BF% near mine, my scale seems to be pretty accurate. But even if it's inaccurate, it's consistent, which is the most important thing for tracking progress.

And, since it says I have a slightly higher than average % of muscle and BF% in the fitness range, I love that thing!

Thank you! I've set it so it shows the same reading as my trainers does. Just wish it would say something else. lol
