So I've started attending a weekly hot yoga class. I noticed that there's nothing in the mfp database about how many calories hot yoga burns. for anyone that doesn't know, hot yoga is taught in a heated room (about 100 degrees) and i sweat like a pig. like totally dripping by the end of the class. so i know i'm burning more calories than i would with just regular yoga.
does anyone know about how many calories per hour hot yoga burns?
i know it's different for everyone depending on weight, height, age, etc., but i would really like some sort of estimation so i can enter it into my diary.

Yoga is beneficial in many ways, but it does not burn many calories. Sweating also does not burn many calories. Ergo, hot yoga may feel good but you are not expending a ton of energy and torching your fat.
I would be very surprised if your yoga class burned even 300 calories.
I cannot give you a source. It is just a fact. Google it, and look for the credible sources.0 -
There are lots of estimators online that can tell you (based ONLY on your body weight, age and sex) how many calories you are burning. Needless to say they're not very accurate.
In my experience, based upon these various calculators I was burning anywhere from 700-1000 calories in 90 minutes. I can't say I believed it - I know how hard I was working, but the calculator had no idea. It is really the same with any calculator, MFPs are included.
SO I've decided that I don't care how many calories I'm burning. I am to RAWR each workout and do my best. Then I eat and enjoy my food. I eat back my exercise calories especially when I do hot yoga.

Here is a link to an article that talks about how many calories the average class of different types of yoga burn, for a hypothetical 150-pound person.
According to this article, i underestimated a bit. But, even using these figures, it is still clear that yoga does not burn what weight-training or jogging will burn.
I don't know much about the page, but the author of the article is a Seattle-based personal trainer.

Hot yoga should burn about the same as regular yoga...it is slightly more intense because the warm room allows you to stretch deeper, but not significantly...0

I would say around 200 calories per hour because you are not really getting your heart rate up. You could always wear a heart rate monitor that counts calories.0

I love hot yoga and power vinyasa. I also use a bodybugg and find it accurately estimates my daily calorie burn. I don't use it when I practice yoga, because all the sweat causes it to slip and disengage. However, based on my weight loss progress when I practice several times a week, I think I typically burn about 300 calories per hour. I usually chart it as 200 to be safe. Interestingly, my calorie burn for the remainder of the day is always higher after yoga. I've noticed the same with other strength training. I know for sure that it isn't the 1,000 calorie workout some people claim it to be, but it is so much more than a basic hatha class. Many people who haven't experienced the difference judge without understanding. It's a great way to get long, lean & strong!0

I do hot yoga (core power if you are in the US) - i burn anywhere from 150-250 cal per class reading from my HRM. I do the class that incorporates cardio and weights so its very tough. Regardless, the higher burn is if i've done some cardio before to get my heart rate up.
probabley worth telling you that i dont burn calories very easliy as i have a farily low body weight, and am very athletic.
I woudl suggest an HRM to see what is accurate for you.0
