Fats

just a quick question, my polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats are automatically set at zero but my salmon fillet has 2.3 poly and 1.8 mono, is this bad for me ?? X

    Salmon is definitely not bad for you

    I'd concern yourself with your overall consumption of fat, and maybe your saturated fats, but I wouldn't worry about the rest. Unless, of course, your doctor has specifically told you that there's some reason for watching this

    Thanks lol ! I just looked it up, if these are the better fats why does mfp have them set at zero ? X

    MFP bunches fat together and does not really give you a specific "bad fats" or "good fats" macro to watch. If you are eating good fats then do not worry about it at all, regardless of your number being red or green.

    Ok, just annoys me a bit at the end of my day to see red numbers, protein I don't worry about being over but the fats always bug me ! Also my cholesterol intake is usually zero and my potassium and salt usually low, should I worry about any of these too much ? X

    Not unless you have a medical reason to do so.

    One thing that could help you that I did - I went to Home -> Goals -> Change goals -> Custom and changed my ratio carbs/protein/fat to 40%/30%/30%. That's by no means "low carb," but it's slightly lower carb and higher protein/fat that what it is set to by default. If you're routinely going over your protein/fat that MFP has set by default, changing it like this could just help you see fewer red numbers

    Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure a lot of the foods entered into MFP simply don't have the potassium and cholesterol entered in (if the person who originally added the food left that field blank, you're going to see zero in your diary). But as was said, unless you have a medical reason to worry about it, don't worry about it

    Personally, I try to get as much protein as reasonably possible, try to avoid extra filler carbs, and let the rest fall where it may. If you're eating reasonably, just hitting the calorie goal is probably the most important thing. Don't worry so much :)

    I believe (note this word, I've carried out no investigation) that MFP bases it's recommendations in line with the RDI of American food labelling http://www.netrition.com/rdi_page.html

    As you can see, there is no recommendation for any fats other than saturated. Similar to the minimum of our own food labels.

    While we're on the subject, did you know;

    For the labels where they list the types of fat, they still rarely list the trans fats. If you take the total fats, subtract the poly, mono and sat, you can assume the remainder is trans fats.
