How to train for an obstacle course?

So - looking for any words of wisdom from people who have trained for (and completed) a longer obstacle course race. I've committed to a twelve mile race this September. Prior to this, my training life has been focused on gpp and building strength. I know I'm going to have to work on my endurance (a lot). But what else? I don't know what the obstacles are going to be yet, as the race is still in development. But it's on the beach, so running in sand will be big.
