high reps low weight vs. low reps high weight

I know everyone has heard that high reps low weight adds definition to your muscles and low reps high weight adds mass, but how exactly? I've heard (only once) that its actually a myth and that any forms of weight training builds mass only.

    Strength training in general adds muscle definition. However, lower weights with more reps builds more muscular endurance where higher weights with less reps builds more muscle mass, if that makes sense.

    Using lighter weights doesn't tear the muscle tissue like lifting heavier weights. So less muscle tissue tearing/less repairing = less muscle mass.

    I'm not sure of the answer, but my trainer has me do both during the same workout/exercise.
