My FT4 pisses me off daily. For steady state cardio, which I loathe, it works just fine. I spent 30 minutes on a rower the other day and it worked wonderfully. If I get on an elliptical or go for a jog, it's great. When I use it when I lift or go to crossfit however, the watch loses it's connection to the transmitter. Every workout. I haven't gotten through a single lifting session or crossfit WOD with it not losing connectivity. I bought it specifically for crossfit so I get extra aggravated with it.
Like everything else, your experience may be better. I've read many people with the same complaint I have, unfortunately after I bought it and googled the problem specifically, and many others that say it's user error. I'm not particularly bright so it may well be an error on my part.
Features wise the FT4 is probably everything you need for "normal" training. It gives you an accurate current HR (when it works), average HR and max HR for your training session and it saves your last 10 sessions. I think 10 anyway, could be more. I'm not sure how accurate the calories burned during your workout is, it registers considerably higher than my bodymedia fit does. I would imagine the true calorie expenditure is somewhere between the two.
Sorry for the rant, but that's my 2 cents.0 -
FT4 and FT7 are virtually the same price on Amazon. ($70)0

I use my FT4 for cardio days and my crossfit WODS. I'm in love with it!
I've never had any problems! If you have an Amazon Prime account you can get it at a discount too. Mine was $450 -
I have an FT7, it's absolutely amazing. It has more features than the FT4, although you're most likely to only need the features offered in the FT4, so either one will be great.
I've had the FT1 and the Timex Easy Trainer. My FT7 is a godsend.0 -
I use an ft4 for running and walking, but haven't tried it with strength or xtraining... I've got no complaints. I think it is good value for money.0
