Tongue Ring - Help Me Please!

I've been mulling over it for years now and I seriously want one. It's that same sort of feeling when I got my septum done. My issue is that I'm studying in education and I need to be able to make this thing virtually invisible for obvious reasons. I haven't been able to find a simple solution like there is for a septum piercing. Can anyone help with ideas/tips? Or would I just be better off not getting one?

There are many rings or studs that are clear or so small that you can not see them. I was in cheer and had many piercings and had to remove them or place a ring in that was clear. My best friend had her tongue pierced and got a SMALL jewel for it and you couldent even tell!0

I hear this idea a lot, but do you think it would work in a professional setting? I have no idea how visible they would be close up.0
-
They really are not that visible, we were a national cheer team and not even our coaches that saw us every day saw them. Let me see if I can find you the link0

Don't do it. I see a lot of broken teeth because of them and it's always close to the front where you can see it.0

Ah! Those do look promising. You didn't have issues with the O rings falling off?0

I'm looking into getting mine pierced further back than the normal "show" piercings.0 -
I never had a tongue piercing, my best friend did, and we were jumping, tossing people in the air, dancing, the whole nine and she never lost hers and nothing ever fell out0

Agreed! I had one too and chipped my tooth when I was 18. I have been dealing with issues of it since and now needed to have the tooth removed and an expensive implant placed.0 -
Even the acrylic ones cause damage. Be careful.0

They do make flesh plugs for the tongue. Plus feelings on piercing are changing even in professional settings. I got my tongue done twice, the regular one through the tongue and one under in the little flap of skin under your tongue.0

Goodness, there's an entirely wider spectrum of opinions than I was expecting. I guess I'll ask the piercer what he thinks (that guy's been brutally honest about every little thing I ask him about), and find some teachers and see what they think. I was also thinking about the changing attitude in the workforce. I still have another two or three years to graduate, and some of that time would be spent in schools, which is why I was asking.0

I had one. My tongue was pierced far back and after the swelling went down and I could switch rings, I went with a super short one so it never was noticeable. Be careful with the plastic balls on some, they can come off a little easier than the metal ones. Had mine 10yrs and never chipped a tooth.0

Don't have one (and don't want one), but I've heard a lot of dental horror stories related to tongue rings.0
-
They can mess up your teeth.... also if they dont' get between taste buds you will be in agony.0

i have 2 tongue rings and i have no problems. im actually thinking about getting a 3rd one too.0

they have really cute plastic ones for your tongue now that don't break your teeth.
as for not being able to see it they have the clear ones and once it is healed you can take it out whenever you want.0 -
Have had mine for nearly 15 years. It's deeper in than most people have it and I haven't had any issues with it chipping my teeth or causing issues. I also work in a corporate job with a variety of clients and generally speaking, if I'm meeting someone new, I err on the side of caution and put in a clear piercing. But once the client knows me well enough I swap it to a gold one. No one has yet had a problem with it.
I agree I don't like the plastic ones for long term use, they come off easily and I've swallowed a few in my time. Hate that!0 -
I got my tongue pierced when I was 14.. (yeah I know.... too young for that piercing)
I just recently took it out last month.. and I am 21. No one ever knew I had one! I used regular rings.. nothing special to hide it.. I had a few jobs and kept it in..
and the topic is making me miss it I took it out because I needed to stop biting it..0 -
Tongue piercings typically stay open for a fairly long time. Try putting it back in!0

I have no experience w/tongue piercings, but I do with teaching. When I taught, I was never free to be myself. I had a belly button ring and my shirt lifted once and I got in trouble. I had to be very careful. We were told we couldn't drink beer in public or in bars in the same country we taught. We were advised to not be on dating sites and if we were, we shouldn't show our faces or needed to be careful what we typed, bc it could cost us our jobs. A co-worker got into trouble for dying her hair different colors nearly every week. It wasn't rad colors like pink, red or blue. It was blonde, brunette or red and back again nearly every week. Normal hair, but change wasn't appropriate they said. She fought them on it and got fired.
I quit teaching because I have a bit of a free spirit about me and while I understand being a certain way at work, being told who to be outside of work was too much. I have one shot at life and if i want to drink in bars, etc in my free time, that should be my business. They own me at school, but they shouldn't own me 24/7 for the majority of my life.0 -
I used to have a boyfriend with a pierced tongue.. it was awful when kissing, having a hard ball hitting my teeth, and there was nothing worse than him wanting to put it back in when it fell out while he was drunk. Personally can't see the appeal.0

Honestly...
Coming from a fellow educator... I wouldn't do it. It's not even a matter of being able to hide it from other adults/co-workers or your administrative staff. Our job as teachers is to set a positive example for all of our kids, and though it may not seem like it, they look to us as a guidepost for EVERYTHING! Whether you are planning on going into elementary or secondary education, kids are much more perceptive than we like to give them credit for, and it would be hard for one of them not to eventually catch a glimpse and bring it up (either in class or with other classmates ). I think they are actually pretty cool and I have a few friends who love theirs, but I'm not sure it's the most appropriate for an adult educator. Being a teacher puts you in a position of power to serve as primary influence students encounter outside their homes--just keep that in mind.0 -

I have one and I went for my dental check up recently..... The technician said my teeth were amazing. I wear acrylic ones which is better than metal. It hurts when u get it done..... You can't eat regular food for a while so its soups and icey drinks.
At the end of the day it's your D. Like with anything there are horror stories which are very rare. It doesn't make you less of the person you are and don't let people tell you otherwise.... It's like tattoos..... Just because I have them doesn't mean I'm a bad person or I'm jobless.....0 -

the retainers are $3 on amazon. I have a friend working for a job corp, state run, and they can't have any piercings visible, she has her nose done, has a clear, flat retainer and it even tricked me, and I have my nose done too! LOL.0

I had two tongue piercings until recently ( nasty infection caused me to have to remove them) they do not do the enamel on your teeth any favours at all!!! That said if you use A retainer bar you should be ok although I have been told they tend to fall out0
