I eat a banana about an hour before I go work out. Otherwise I'd probably pass out from low blood sugar and lose my teeth when I hit the machine with my face.0

When do you workout? If it is first thing in the morning try working out on a fast (without eating anything). If not, then simply eat whatever is within your diet goal-wise. Timing is largely irrelevant for most people.
Research has shown that food consumed within a small window (0-2hrs) AFTER a workout is metabolized quicker. This aids in digestion, caloric deficiency and workout recovery. BUT unless you are really killing it at the gym with weight training, HIIT, or some other high intensity program, timing is negligible.
If you are asking because you feel better with food in the belly then I suggest oatmeal, banana and cheese. At least that is what I have in the belly when I hit the gym on my lunch break. I eat 90% of my carbs before lunch/workout. For lunch, post workout, I eat mostly protein and veggies.0
