Am I eating enough?

I stalled out at 1200 calories. It wasn't enough. I lost at first but that stopped until I upped my calories. I also lost a ton of hair.

One of these days someone is going to sue MFP for making that ridiculous 1200-calories suggestion so easy to get accidentally by a new person. I ate 1200-1300 calories for several months and I lost a lot of hair too, have a thin patch on top. My nails also chipped and flaked and broke. And I was exhausted all the time and could never get warm.

Since I upped my calories, I'm still losing weight but now I am warm and I have energy. It seems so logical now, I can't understand why I ever ate so little for so long. :/

I stuck to what mfp told me to eat and lost 18 pounds in about 3 months. Just follow it/

You should know that you will lose weight on 1200 AT FIRST. But it is not healthy and not sustainable. Just because something works for a while doesn't mean its safe or healthy.

Just as an update I've been eating 1500 now for a week and weighed in this morning for the first time - 1.75 pound loss - first loss for a long time! BOOM! Thanks for the advice everyone! 1500 it is!

I'm so happy to see you do this. You will be healthier and stronger and less likely to binge when you get the fuel and nutrients that your body needs. And you will actually build muscle now with your exercise.

Recheck your numbers with every 5 pounds lost. Be aware that as you get closer to your goal weight, you will need to decrease the percentage below TDEE from 20% down to 15% then 10%. If you hit another plateau, recalcuate your numbers and eat a bit more.

The nice thing about this method is that by the time you lose your final couple of pounds, you will be eating very close to your maintenance calories. This will make your transition to maintenance very smooth and easy.

Another positive: So many studies have shown that when you lose weight fast, it comes back. Just about every nutritionist and doctor will tell you that you should not lose more than 1-2 pounds a week max (on average) for healthy, sustainable weight loss.
  • Definitely not! I'm 5"2 and currently weigh 130 and I lose weight at a 1,500 daily intake, with exercise 6 times a week and so on. I saw your update and I'm glad you're consuming more calories! Good Luck! :)
