I know I need to set small goals and not just my overall. What is a reasonable amount of weight to lose on short term goals? And how much time should I give myself?? I just feel defeated looking at the long term goal of 40+ lbs and I have only lost 2lbs. This is my first time trying to lose weight and I just need a little help.

Make non weight goals, focused on fitness and nutrition.

First, are you already tracking every day? If not, that can be a goal?
Do you eat at least 5 fruits and veg a day?
    Do you eat enough protein?
    Do you include healthy fats?

Do you have an exercise routine?
If not, make a goal to MOVE 10 minutes a day.
If so, what goals can you set to be better? If you ride a bike, make goals to go faster and/ or further.

I found it easier to make my goals non-weight related. I want to wear this pair of jeans by my birthday. I want to be able to run 5k by <date>. I want to lose 2 inches off my waist by <date>.

And sometimes treat related. No more <insert treat here> until I've lost 5 lbs. I can buy <item> once I lose 5 lbs.

I still set fitness goals even though I'm in semi-maintenance.

My utlimate goal was to lose 30lbs. I broke it into two 15lbs goals. It working for me, I am on my second 15lbs goal now. I have been at this since January. Good Luck!
