No locks on lockers

When I go to the gym in the evenings, the lockers are usually pretty full. I may open 10 lockers with NO LOCK on them (but full of coats, purses, phones, etc) before finding one that is empty to use. I actually put a lock on mine, after all, isn't that the point?

In the situations where I cannot find an empty locker, would it be wrong of me to take someone's things and set them aside so I can actually USE the lock I own?

Um...yeah? Say you forget your lock one day, would you want your stuff throw onto the bench or taken out of the locker you had your stuff in?
  • I don't use a lock because I don't bring anything of value into the gym. It doesn't make the locker any less mine to use while I'm working out. Just sayin...

Ethics are what you do when you know no one is watching. Yes it would be wrong and frankly a little selfish. You're basically saying your needs are more important than someone elses. Lock or no lock they were there first.

Lol! Are there really no other lockers? Just carry your stuff with you then. It's rude to mess with OPP.

You all are very trusting - I NEVER forget my lock. If I did, I would walk my stuff out to the car or carry it with me.

And OP I feel you, yesterday I opened 8 "unlocked" lockers before I found 1 that wasn't full that I could use. BUT... in winter I can't complain, no one wants to walk from the car to the gym cold, but I do find it annoying.

Not sure if I would dump someone's stuff out UNLESS every single locker was taken. Then all's fair in lockers & locks.

    Yes, it would be wrong.

I put my coat in the locker but there are no valuables inside so I don't bother locking it. (And I live close enough to the gym that if some disgusting person decided to steal my coat, I could still make it home without trouble.) But if someone took my coat out of the locker and put their stuff inside, I would be mighty annoyed.

While I would be tempted to do that, I think for a second "What if I came back from doing ym exercises and I found ym stuff on the bench instead of the locker where I left them?" I would probably want to ninja punch the woman who put my stuff there in the ovaries and possibly throw my running shoes at her for touching my stuff.

    I won't slap a b%ch, but I won't hesitate to shake one.

I never bring a lock, purse and phone and things stay in the trunk of my car. And if someone wants to steal my sweater/coat, they probably needed it worse than I did anyway.

This! I hate when people do that too. IMO, its a little rude of people to use them if they are just storing items that don't need to be secured anyway (are there no coat racks for that kind of stuff at your gym?). Regardless...you moving someone's belongings is not appropriate :ohwell:

Maybe you can ask the gym management to address the issue or something...but don't take it into your own hands.

For the record, I have never touched anyone else's items and really don't plan on it.. I just become very annoyed with the situation and not being able to lock my things up because over half the lockers being used are not locked.

There are a ton of people at my gym that do the same thing. I don't really know that I would ever want to do that but hey if they trust strangers that much good for them. And yeah it's annoying that you have to go searching through the lockers to find something, but it would be wrong to move their stuff just because they don't have a lock.

Instead, why don't you put your clothes in with the other person's stuff and then put the lock on it so her stuff is protected too?

I always wondered who the people were who thought the world completely revolved around them. Thank you for self identifying.

It would not be a good idea to moves someone elses stuff. Just because you have a lock and they don't doesn't mean you should have priority over them. I do understand how annoying it is though to open locker after locker. But what would you do if the person whose stuff you moved is now sitting there with her stuff on the bench in front of the locker you took. That would not be a good confrontation.

Maybe talk to the gym about putting up a coat rack so jackets won't be filling up the lockers. That's what one of my gyms did.

Coat racks only work for coats, not your work clothes you just changed out of, including bra or whatever. You need a locker, but a lock just isn't always necessary. Like I said, if you steal my sweater, you probably needed it worse than I did.

So are you only annoyed that the occupied locker doesn't have a lock or are you annoyed that the locker is occupied at all? Also, what if someone just put a lock on the locker and didn't put anything in it? Would you be annoyed then?

Happens to me EVERY morning! There are two sets of lockers at my gym (quick lockers and full length lockers) and they all have BUILT IN locks and NO ONE USES THEM!!! All you have to do is type any 4 numbers and close it. A good ol 1-2-3-4 *click* would suffice.

But no, instead every day I go through 900 lockers that are taken with stuff in them and left completely open. WITH purses AND keys (they drive nice cars too!) that apparently have no value to them.

One day, I'm just going to lock them all so they have to go to the desk and get them opened.

Removing all of their items and using the locker would be completely inappropriate.

But switching socks between two lockers is ok.

no, you shouldn't do that. That's rude.
I don't have a lock to use, and I am usually grouchy after my workout because I'm all sweaty and tired. If I came into the locker room to see you moving my stuff, you would probably be introuduced to a whole new world of colorful language.

Although it can be frustrating to open several lockers and find them full, what I personally find annoying is the ignorant jerks that leave their gym bag on a bench while they workout or shower. I have thought about kicking gym bags acrossed the room on many occasions.

I very seldom use the lockers at the gym. Only when it's extremely cold and I need to wear a coat in. My purse is locked in my car. My coat is hung in a locker but I don't bother to lock it. I don't even own a lock and am not inclined to purchase one for the few times I actually use a locker.

Annoyed that the lockers are occupied with no lock, when some people DO want to use them to lock their items up but can't. There is a big stretch of empty wall where I have seen people leave their bags/coats if they do not have a lock, which I appreciate and there is a big key rack at the front desk where many people hang their keys.

If someone put a lock on a locker with nothing in it, I simple would not know, it's locked.
