Allergy Testing!!!

Since the birth of my second child 3 years ago, I have felt like CRAP! I am tired all the time, have "morning sickness" all the time, and throw up whenever my husband I go out to eat. I saw a doctor, and she said it is because of STRESS since my second child was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis. Yeah, I am stressed, but I knew there was something more to it. The doctor put me on acid reflux medicine, and wanted to put me on a anxiety medicine too - but I said no. I am not big on medicine....After struggling for another year, I finally asked her to refer me to allergy testing. Come to find out I am allergic to CORN! I know this is the basis of most of the times I have vomited looking back, and most of the time something was fried in corn oil or contained insane amounts of corn syrup (Mounds bar). I have a lot of learning to do, but this is a reminder that sometimes there is more to a doctor's diagnosis. Remember, we are our own advocate, so if something just doesn't feel right - keep digging for answers. Does anyone have any tips on how to avoid corn????

    Good for you for not taking an answer that you knew in your gut (literally, LOL) wasn't right. As for avoiding corn...it is a lot easier to do if you avoid packaged food. Eat whole foods- meats, veg, fruit, rice beans- and you can easily avoid corn products.

    it's actually not too difficult - think of it in a positive light! this FORCES you to eat good foods, look more closely at labels, and avoid processed crap. the more one-ingredient foods you eat, the easier to deal with food allergies. so I'd consider eating 80-90% whole foods with one ingredient, and then for those other foods you love, just make sure to do your homework and check the labels!

    I don't eat a lot of corn or corn based products.. eat whole raw foods, cook from scratch and control what is in your food. If you *must* have packaged processed foods read the labels in thier entirety and look up what the words you don't know mean.. you'll be suprised what they call corn and sugar and harmful checmicals.

    Stick with fish and salads and chicken at resturants.. baked not fried and tell them you're allreagic to corn and to plaese not use corn oil. They will comply.

    I can't eat anything shellfish or anything that couldh ave come in contact with shellfish.. You'll be surpised at how many pre-packed processed things I can't eat. It's very easy to avoid them when you read the label and go.. hmm eat this and die or skip it and live..

    I have three kids and they all have allergy issues. My oldest has severe allergy issues and if she comes in contact with a peanut or eggs she could have anaphylaxsis. We've had a lot of learning to do. Corn is actually much harder to avoid than you'd think. The biggies that have to be labeled are milk, wheat, nuts, soy, and eggs, but not corn.

    One thing to look for as far as corn are tocopherols. Basically vitamin E which isn't bad but a lot of times the get it from a corn source. That one is sneaky. Also dryer sheets, if you use them, are scented corn paper towels. The slick coating on the dryer sheet is corn based so if you're having skin issues that might be why. Like I said we learned A LOT by trial and error.

    I got a lot of information from this site above. Take is slow because it can be OVERWHELMING! Just start by cutting the biggies and if that doesn't work or is helping but not getting rid of the problem start looking more closely at the derivatives.

    Unfortunately a lot of living with allergies is trial and error. All the best to you and if you have any questions don't hesitate!

    Thank you for the responses! My little man also has a peanut/tree nut allergy, so I am used to reading labels. However, it is much easier with Peanuts and tree nuts because it has to be listed on the label ingredients. I guess I will do my best with trial and error.
