Struggled with BB squats.

I went to the gym last night and one of the trainers there is excellent and said he would spot me. I did a quick circuit with another girl before started the weights, which involved squats with a 12kg bar (Down , up slightly, hold, down then up - as many in 1 minute) He said my form doing them was great.

Before we started the 30kg BB squats he just wanted to check my form with the 20kg bar first. I was unable to rest the bar and get my arms backwards. He got me to sit on the bench and stretched me out. He said my upper back was really tight and needed mobilising. He also recommended a proper massage.

He has also advised I leave out the BB squats for now until I have sorted my back out. In the mean time he said to do squats with a 12kg dumbbell (held at the chest)

Has anyone else experienced this? If so how long before you were able to go back to BB squats? Also will the 12kg squats still be effective? Any advice on how to get my back "mobilised"?

I just gripped the bar wider. Problem solved.

(Eventually, I could bring my hands closer and closer)

Also look up the stretch ' shoulder dislocation')

    Thank you.

I am hopefully going to book in for a massage on Saturday. I might try with the bar again on Monday and grip wider. I think my problem is not rest it actually on my neck and actually bringing my arms back.

Same here. I must have been close to having the right flexibility because it didn't take more than a couple of weeks for my shoulders to stretch to the point where I could grip the bar properly.

I think as long as you're working towards getting the right grip you're probably ok doing the BB squats.

Shoulder dislocations, scapular wall slides, and get a foam roller - it will change your life.

    Thanks again.

Deep tissue massage booked (scared it will hurt LOL)

Will definitely take on board the tips, so if there are any more tips, then keep 'em coming LOL :)

I used one, they have them at the gym.
  • i'd say have a doc check you out(xrays), if it's not hurting, maybe just muscles/tendons and a massage would loosen you up?
