Does anyone actually read about what they should be doing when they undergo these apparently emotional and highly trying weight loss programs, or do they just jump in and try hard without any direction?
This site/forum needs a thread dedicated to sound exercise principles and basic weight loss info that isn't controversial or which doesn't promise anything special. Something that can be easily understood and debunk all the useless info that's out there which is causing so many to waste their time and willpower.
Agreed? What can we do about it?

No one wants to hear that. It usually takes several failed attempts a the lemonade diet, or some magic meal replacement or the latest pill before most people are willing to take the time to actually find out how to lose weight sensibly. We live in a right here, right now society that hands us everything instantly so why would weight loss be any different?0

There are a few groups and posts that focus on reality.0

Who's going to be monitoring and running those threads? A fitness "professional"? Nutritionist? Dietician?
I take what people say on here with a grain of salt because in most cases it's all or nothing. If you don't squat you're an idiot. If you don't dead lift you might as well just not even bother going to the gym. Eat clean and 500 times a day or you'll just curl up and die.
And even if there was a thread dedicated to what you say there would still be debates and controversy over it because there will always be someone who thinks they know everything.0 -

On the main forums, it won't work. There was a thread locked earlier today because a couple of people took exception to the "highly controversial" concept of "calories in, calories out." :ohwell:0

Ha! Fitness is the least of our concerns buddy.
You should see the relationship advice threads.0 -
Yeah it's cool if there are groups, and I agree there will always be controversy, but there is simple solid information out there that needs to be shown prominently.
I mean, the site already espouses the concept of "calories in, calories out". You can argue all day about other things but seriously, there's no controversy there.
Why not elaborate to explain how exercise actually helps i.e. stress not reps are what builds muscle. "toning" is just building muscle and loosing fat, etc...
There's not controversy there (I don't confuse complaining with controversy), and everyone would be better off.0 -
Please be quiet; you're disrupting my echolocation system.0

I stand corrected. But I still don't care to confuse people who want to complicate things or find shortcuts with any legitimate controversy.
And btw I understand that there is more to it than calories in/out, but not much unless your body is literally malfuctioning, and if you have to wonder about it before you've done the hard work, heads up, yours isn't one of them.0 -

Also, you can't ever get rid of ignorance, so it's best to just ignore the people who spew nonsense constantly on here. There do seem to be a LOT of them especially in the last 6 months or so.0 -

I was actually a bit disturbed when I looked around the forums and saw some of the things people were saying and doing.
But I guess the reality is that MFP is just a tool and that the ideas and attitudes people have before they start using it will probably be much the same as the ideas and attitudes they have WHILE using it.
We could have threads run by professional trainers and nutritionalists, but most likely the people looking at them will be people who listen to trainers and nutritionalists, while those people making threads about the lemon detox diet will continue to get their advice from 'gossip' magazines.0 -
