Weight Loss Words of Wisdom

I have two bits of wisdom that can be used in making other changes in your life.

1. Take it one day at a time. Patience is a virtue (which I’m still working on). If you fall get back up, don’t let one step off the path completely detour your journey.

2. Don’t compare yourself to others. We are all unique. Measure your success by how you define it, not by what others have achieved. We have different bodies, different surgeries, different health issues, no two people are alike and no two people lose the same way or at the same speed!

    Well, I got this, my standard cut&paste "Welcome Aboard" post:

    This is easy - here's all ya' gotta do:

    Cook smart, lotsa good filling stuff. Some fruits, lotsa veggies, some grains-cereals, some starchy stuff, some lean meat. Almost nothing fried (and certainly nothing batter dipped & deep fried), and very very little pastry/cakey stuff.

    Count your calories accurately with the food guide here, and stay as close to your calorie allowance as you reasonably can. If you cook properly you shouldn't be too uncomfortable on the calorie allowance MFP will give you.

    Get some exercise - work that gym, walk a little every day, something - that's a huge help. Remember to log your exercise and eat at least some (I eat most) of your exercise calories. Exercise is a self-feeding phenomenon. If you push yourself to do just a little today (it's supposed to be hard,,, it's exercise ) then you'll feel better about it and it'll be easier to do it again tomorrow. Then in a week you'll be able to do more, and it'll start to get fun. In a year you might be running 10k's,,, it's up to you.

    And drink your water!

    That's it, piece o' cake. Wife and I have been doing it for about a 16 months now and we've done well. Lost about 135 pounds between us, and we're in much better shape. You can do it too.

    And this - "How to fight the munchies"

    Most of the time you're not even hungry, just bored. So find something to do.

    Try this: next time you're chilling out at the place and you think about gnoshing on something you don't need, try to think of one thing you've been putting off. One little chore, one friend you were going to call, one little something that needs fixed,,, and do it. Just get up off your butt and go do it.

    Most of us have plenty to do, we're just lazy or thoughtless of we tend to procrastinate... Well, procrastinating just gives us more time to eat. Try this, it's neat, kind'a fun, and it gets stuff done.

    love this post and it came on a day where I really needed it.

    1. Excercise as much as you can, even simple things like heal raises while waiting in a long time, or pushups against your kitchen counter.

    2. Diary all your food.

    3. Read the inspirational posts on MFP.

    4. Realize and see that all of us fall of the wagon, and its easy to just get back on

    I like the tip about getting up and doing something you've been putting off. I notice that now that I'm not snacking like I used to, I do get a lot more done and it seems I have been doing this naturally. I think this is the first time that my room has been clean in a while. But, now that i'm conscious of this great tip I think I will do this even more. Thank you so much!

    Also...some words of wisdom from mua...

    Food is the key to maintaining. A month ago I got lazy, I stopped working out, but I continued eating healthy....I maintained the weight that I had lost and I honestly think my body regulated at that weight. Doing it the healthy way will help you maintain. Crashing is for people who dont want it off for good. Remember to drink lots of water, and eat right. Your energy will skyrocket and you will just feel good about yourself.

    Excercise is the key to losing. Just a few days ago, I decided to get back on the horse and begin working out again. Since then I have been able to kickstart losing again and the lbs are flying off like they were before. Make sure to kick your butt without overdoing it. Dont add something into your exercise regimen that can't stay there forever. And putting a goal for yourself gives your a little extra boost...I'm going to do the hustle up the hancock in March of next year. Training to do something is fun and it lights that fire that we all need sometimes.

    Mixing both is the key to everything. Eat healthy and workout and you'll be a rockstar. It might take a little while for your body to realize what is going on and drop the lbs that it should be but it will come...all in good time.

    You are a wise man Casper, thanks for putting this together. Most of it we all know but reading this type of post keeps me focused (and makes me feel normal).

    Actually YXSmith started this post. Not sure why mine moved to the top, I think somebody's clock is off.

    Here's more:

    For a lot of us who have had real long-term success here it's been a real lifestyle change. Patience is the most important thing here, and patience gets a lot easier once you accept one important thing and make your peace with it. And that is - - -:

    This is not a "diet". This is not something that you will do for a while until the scale says a certain number, and then you can go back to your old ways. Well,,, Ok, you COULD do that, and then you'll probably yo-yo right back up to your start weight.

    If you wish to be trim and healthy and take good care of yourself - this is how you will live the rest of your life. The first several months are the hardest, you'll be on really strict calorie control until you reach a weight/size/fitness level that you're satisfied with, and from there you'll go into "maintenance" where you don't have to be so strict and it's easier. But the days of just shoving whatever you want in your mouth are over. You'll always be conscious of your eating and your exercise and your activity level. This is just what some of us have to do if we wish to be healthy and look good and feel good. No - life isn't fair, but c'est la vie.

    Once you accept that it's not going to end, it gets easier to be patient. The good news is that it gets easier. Once the habits get formed it all becomes 2nd nature and it's simple.

    I promise you it's worth it. "Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels" is absolutely true. You're about to experience something amazing and it's fun and interesting and SO worthwhile.

    I'm really digging this excuse to page back thru all my old scribbles for pearls,,, Hmmm... Maybe I should compile it into a book. Call it "Uncle Casper's bathroom reader (for folks losing weight)".

    Another,,, and this is probably my favorite.

    I was pudgy most of my life. I was about 170 pounds when I was 10. Had a few puberty induced trim years and then began to balloon again in my 20's. I was un-huge enough to be in happy denial until a couple years ago when I quit smoking. Then it got wierd, I got up to 270 pounds (I'm 5'8" tall). I couldn't sleep, I never felt good and had no energy. I finally got pretty disgusted with myself, and like the buddha I sat beneath the tree and thought about it long and hard, and here's what I came up with.

    We get fat because we make bad choices. Nobody wrestles us down and stuffs Hohos down our throats. I was fat because I chose the wrong kinds of foods, and too much food, and then I chose to pick that food up and put it in my mouth eat it. Nobody made me do any of this. I also chose to spend my spare time sitting on a couch watching television instead of getting up and doing something. Nobody tied my fat butt to that couch.
    My life changed the day I really decided not to do that anymore. Now, 95% of the time I choose an appropriate amount of a good food. When I have the chance, 80% of the time I choose to take part in a healthy activity. That's it - I stopped choosing things that were temporarily pleasant but were actually bad for me - and started making smarter choices. I have reaped enormous benefit from doing this, it has literally changed my life.

    That's it,,, it really is that simple. It's not easy, but it's simple. We are adults, not idiots, not fools or children. We are in control of what we do. We know what to do, and must simply choose to do it. (And forgive ourselves when we screw it up,,, 'cause we all do that too).

    Thanks again and I am so glad you said it is not easy......:-) But simple enough. You make it sound so simple. That is why is important to find out why as in my case we turn to food for comfort. Which is where I am at now. I am in the process of finding out why I like to use food as a friend and not people.
