lifting/toning HELP!

since starting MFP on Monday, I've been going to the gym every day and getting in some great cardio each time.
I'd really like to start lifting weights, building muscle, and toning. I'm not necessarily looking to get "ripped" but I'd love to have a strong, tight body.
I'd especially like to work on my triceps, abs (I have that gross lower-tummy pooch!), and thighs/butt.
can anybody give me some advice, suggestions, or tips!?
thank you!!!

The current 'best advice' seems to be to look at something like starting strength or strong lifts routines - both are designed to give you a good 'foundation' of muscle.
Also much praised on here is 'new rules of lifting for women'.
Have a search through women's success stories on here - it's pretty hard for a woman to get 'ripped' and you won't do it accidentally!
This is a nice little image I bookmarked to show a friend from one such:
