Not enough calories?

Ok- I'm not understanding this fully. My daily allotment of calories is 1200. I'm breastfeeding, which consumes about 500 calories/day, so I add that in as a food at -500 calories. I worked out twice today, consuming about 550 altogether. I'm currently "under" my caloric intake- and greatly so (I think I'm under by like 700 or something. I was under by 1011 but I decided to have a glass of almondmilk with ovaltine and a small bowl of lentil soup to add in some calories).
I certainly don't feel like I'm starving! I ate quite a bit today.
My best guess is that I was eating empty calories before. I feel like everything was coming from sugar- could that by why I feel like I'm eating the same- but am really not?
