I'm thinking of getting a tattoo of my 3 month old son whom I love more than anything.. maybe on my chest, doubt I'll do it on the arm. Never had a tattoo before so I'll have to man up if it hurts lol !

If you know of a great tattooer, go for it. But more than any other tattoo, portraits are the easiest to butcher. Even though my tattooer is really good, I opted for the safe route and had their names inked instead.0

<< This is my tattoo to represent my kids. Their constelations are in the sky. This was after the 1st sitting (3 1/2 hours). It didn't hurt much. Kinda a little sting but no worse.
I agree not to go for the portrait. Think about something that makes you think of your son or something that represnts him in your eyes. Personally I waited till they had personalities to see what I would do since they change so fast.
Good luck!0 -
I wouldn't do a portrait. I've seen some pretty scary ones! Names and dates, yes!0
-
I don't recommend that. They usually look like Chuckie dolls.0
-
That's nice... but in my experience, tats of people's faces never look right. Maybe you could just get his name and DOB. My ex-husband have both our daughters' initials tatooed.0

Like a portrait tattoo? Those rarely turn out good. Go for like some kind of symbol that represents him, or his initials or something.0

What if your son decides to divorce you later? Then what?0
-
Just make sure you get an artist that is strictly a portrait artist and don't worry about your son divorcing you, how gay, you never stop loving your children even if they think you suck!0

OH my god I have to leave this conversation, but not without saying they don't have a clue what they're talking about, I've been around tattoos my whole life and have a half a body myself. I have seen some of the most incredible portraits tatted on people. See any tattoos on these people? Not so much!0

Save up and go see Kat Von D :happy:0

I have a few tattoos and portraits are one of the easiest ones to be f*d up. If you DO decide to do it, please, please, PLEASE make sure you research your tattoo artist, see their previous work and how their work looks a couple years later (at the least).
I want a tattoo to represent my son, but it will not be a portrait. I plan to come up with something that represents him to me, have his DOB and maybe his name.
Oh and as far as pain goes, it honestly just depends on the person's pain tolerance. Tattoo's to me, are almost therapeutic feeling. There are a few places that hurt, but for the most part, I don't mind it. (Like right along the spine....like a hot iron being stuck to your back.)
Oh and there are some amazing portrait artist out there. Like this guy, Stefano Alcantara.

Calm down, it's clearly a joke...0 -

Fair enough. There are some very talented artists so let me just adjust my advice to the OP to say, be sure to check out their portfolio first. Be very picky about who puts this tattoo on you.0 -

There are some good portraits out there, but I'd recommend OP to be prepared to pay big bucks for it.0 -

I also prefer a creative idea like this.
A name and date is too ambiguous of the meaning to onlookers, IMO.
A portrait might feel creepy to the child, when they get older and reach the normal separation stage.0 -
Exhibit A: Stefano Alcantara :P

If you can afford an artist such as Kat Von D! I'd re-think that idea...or you could end up on Tattoo Nightmares!!0

I'm simply not a fan of portraits, but that's merely my opinion.
I turned the f-holes of my cello tattoo into cursive L's for my son's name. I also plan on getting it spelled out in Ogham down my spine. No one would get that anyhow *LOL*
Do what makes you happy, though.0 -

They hurt, but if it is something you really want, it's worth it.
I agree on finding the right artist. Talk to them, look at their work...if it doesn't feel right, find another artist. Portraits are one of the hardest to do, and even the best tattoo artist will deny doing them.0 -
I don't think they hurt at all. I sat for over 5 hours for one and fell asleep... It really depends on the person.0

OMG. I hope they didn't pay for that. :mad:0 -
I got a tattoo FOR my son (not OF), I got a patchworked giraffe with his name and b day0
-
I'd recommend name, date, something representing his name... he is going to change so much over the years and you're going to appreciate his little face at every stage. It's too hard to just have one... just do something more timeless. My opinion only... but yeah if you're going to go with a portrait, pay as much as you possibly can.0

Ok, I literally spent the last five minutes laughing at that. I had to muffle my mouth with a pillow so I didnt wake up my roommate. Wooow.....oh wow hahahaha. thanks to whoever posted that. I needed it.0
