Is my elliptical machine wrong?

My husband got me a used elliptical machine that I have been getting on daily. I have been doing the random hills on level 5 & busting a sweat (I don't just get on it & do it leisurely). However, after my 30 minutes the machine will say something ridiculous like I only burned 42 calories. But according to MFP it's like 432 calories. Which one is right? Could my elliptical machine be wrong?

You are definitely burning more than 42 calories. However many say that MFP numbers are too high. You might want to get a HRM like Polar for a better estimate.

HRM is definitely the way to go. My normal reading for 30 min. is 250 calories.

Thanks I'll definitely get a HRM now. I want to make sure I am burning calories & reporting the proper amount.
