  • Thanks everyone for your great suggestions!!
  • If you can find a pool, it is a great way to start moving and exercising while, like most of the other people have said, not feeling like you're working out. It works all muscle, easy on the joints and is really fun! That's how i got into it, and then other things progressed.

I find exercise hard, too - I equate it with work - and so, I tried many things before finding the one thing I love to do the most, and that is walk... It is easy, there is nothing to set up just pack up some water and some good shoes and off I'd go.

Now - I came across something even more fun - WALK AWAY THE POUNDS - at first I didn't like it because my shins hurt - but I coiuld endure it for 15 minutes - I found that after the 2nd or 3 rd day, my body was actually looking forward to it- Now I am up to the 3 mile walk - it is fun, Leslie Sansome is fun to listen to - I like her latest dvds - she incorporates aerobic/cardio w/weight training- and I love it -

    I also enjoy Wii Zumba

your body will rebel at first, the key is to find what you like to do so it will not feel like work... that is why I like walking - it is simple and if you have a friend to walk with you, the minutes fly by -

Jessica - I do too!! It is the only program that has really worked for me -

the other one that I didn't keep up with but made me feel good was taebo - billy blank? Having a video really helps me to stick with it.
  • Go dancing!!! I go to Ceroc a couple of times a week and as many freestyles as I can without upsetting my husband - who I have yet to convince to join me. It's fantastic exercise, great fun and very social. All shapes, sizes and ages go, but everyone has a good time and no-one is judgemental. I'm 48 and my favourite dance partner is a sprightly 71 year old!
And, best of all, as you dance the weight off and trim your body you've got a good excuse to go out and treat yourself to a new dress or shoes ... or both!!!

You are soooo not alone, as you can see. I still hate exercise and it's been nearly a year and 20 pounds down since I've gotten into this whole thing.

Yes, the key really is finding something you like. For me, that was hiking with a friend. I also walk a hell of a lot more than I used to, even if it's just going out to run some errands or window shop kind of walking rather than a formal walk around a park. It might be a small thing but it adds up.

And you know, for as much as I hate exercising, I still do Jillian Michaels and other aerobics DVDs at home because I know that it works after enough time spent on it, and I will enjoy the payoff at the end. It sucks and it makes me wanna rip my hair out sometimes but hey, 30 minutes a day, 3 times a week? It really doesn't hurt that much when I think of it like that.

Also, if gyms scare you, I promise you it's okay to not sign up for a gym. I loathe them and sometimes I worry that I can't make progress without a gym, but I've seen a lot of people on MFP make it just fine to their goals without a gym.
  • Yeah, it's always that way when you don't exercise....you freakin LOATHE the idea. But once you actually start doing it frequently, it makes you feel great and you actually start to like it. My advice is to just do it and the endorphins'll come flowin in and you'll be feelin good and enjoying it.

Exercise can be REALLY annoying for me too, but weight training is my biggest issue. When it comes to cardio, my favorite thing to do is dance. I'll happily dance for an hour to some "dancey" tunes in front of my mirror and burn about 600 calories. You don't need a class, video or choreography. Just feeling the music is enough.

Essentially, adding music to any exercise makes it WAY better. For instance, I find walking extremely boring, but when I have some nice tunes or *something* to listen to, I can easily walk for an hour and feel entertained and motivated to do it again.

I also love to skate at the skate rink, it's SUPER fun, even if you kinda suck like me, lol. I like to play the new dance games as well. Michael Jackson: The Experience is my favorite, but they're all enjoyable and many of the faster songs really get you sweating and out of breath.

Another idea is hula hooping. (Again, while listening to music.) I bought a weighted hula hoop a year ago that I'm starting to use again. It can be really fun when you start moving around and getting into the groove of it. At first it will beat you up though, lol, so your body will have to acclimate to the force of the weight against your midsection.

Try a few things, see what you do like. I started out hating exercise. I tried all kinds of things, yoga, Pilates, running, step, jump rope, you name it. I found a few things I do like, and I do them regularly. I hike and bike in the warmer months, and I have started lifting weights. I love love love lifting, I thought I would hate it, but I love it. Did I say I love it?

I hope you can find something you like.

It takes about a month of regular exercise before you'll start to truly enjoy it, and not only tolerate doing it but want to push your limits, do more in a longer amount of time, lift heavier, run faster. THEN you will be glad that you stuck with it, and then you will be having fun!!
Lies! I hate... or more accuratly loath exercise, 2 months straight and I still hate it.

You just have to do it, pick one thing and go and don't stop. It is not the end of the world, I look at it as part of my job. I may hate getting out of bed in the morning but I still do it, so I hate getting of the couch but eh I still do it. You will get a routine after a month, you may not enoy it but its part of everyday life.

Edited to correct typos from my tablet.

That second F is a naughty word, but MFP frowns on that...

Honestly, some people might learn to love it. Others will never. Don't ever, ever tell me I'll someday learn to love it. But I do it anyway.

Well, I'm sorry that I was trying to give the OP a positive yet realistic message in saying it'd take at least a month. If you truly never learn to love exercise, then what motivation do you have to ever do it once you reach your weight goal? If you can't take at least a tiny bit of joy or pride in the things you do for yourself, to keep yourself healthy... then I really feel sorry for you.
