Local workouts = local fat loss?

Hey all,

I've been making progress with my weight loss over the past few months, but I'm ready to step it up and join a gym. Obviously I know the importance of exercising all over the body, but I was wondering if there's any correlation between what areas you focus on and losing fat from those areas?

For example, say you wanted to specifically lose fat from your arms, would arm-centric routines (weights, cross trainers etc) help? Disregarding the toning of the muscles, would the energy required be taken straight from the surrounding reserves, or the more general areas (such as stomach, thighs etc)?

    No

you can't spot reduce, you have to lose weight overall.

Think of it like a pool of water. If you take a bucket of water from one end of the pool, does that area of the pool go down? No, the water in the entire pool evens out.

You will build muscle in the areas you focus on (assuming you are eating a surplus and work them hard enough). You will not lose the fat stored in those locations as a result of working them.
