which do you prefer, NROLFW, or strong lift 5x5, I got a barbell yesterday, and will be starting heavy lifting next week, and dont know which to start doing. also do you do cardio also or just weight lifting, currently I run 3 days a week, which I will continue with atleast for another 1 1/2 months because I am racing the 5 mile Montana Womens Run May 11th, but after that should I stop running.

I do StrongLifts 5x5 and I like it but have nothing to compare it to as its the only structured plan Ive done....

You can do cardio on off days in the beginning however, You will find it hard to near impossible to continue cardio on non-lifting days if you progress as the Stronglifts programs directs....your body will demnd the days off to rest & rebuild

if it comes down to it, I will start walking instead on my off days (its the only break time I get from my kids and I treasure that me time haha), right now I want it to work my thighs, butt and core

as for cardio, it depends what your goal is overall. don't stop running if the race is your goal.

Can't really say between SL and NROLFW, I've only done Starting Strength and Wendler's.

Buuuuut if you enjoy running, there's no reason not to keep doing it. A lot of cardio haters who lift will tell you its a waste of time to do them both and will encourage you to drop the running, but I disagree. They supplement each other pretty well as long as you don't go too crazy with the running. And my running has only improved since starting weight lifting. I run multiple times a week and lift at least 3 times a week and can't say that either have really suffered. I've been making strength gains and at least maintaining my running if not getting faster.

or you can kinda go off StrongLifts plan like I do..... right now Im not increasing weights because I am training for a triathlon..... the cross training effect of the weight lifting helps with the rnning biking and/or swimming but you arent over taxing your body by trying to increase weights every workout session PLUS do cardio on days off

NROL4W got complicated fast and the later phases involve longer lifting sessions, it wasn't for me. I liked the simplicity of SL. Also, if all you have is a barbell for right now, SL may be your better bet. You'd have to modify a few of the NROL moves or look into some additional equipment.

I started with new rules until I educated myself and made my own lifting plan. I currently do both cardio and lifting I only lift 2-3 days a week but just doing this made me lose 15% body fat in8 months. I will never give up cardio I need it. I also recommend checking out the blog no more muffin top I believe it's called. She has great practical advice and plans.

Just reading the NROL4W book it seemed complicated. I went with strong lifts 5 x 5 also.

I kind of made my own plan with a mix of new rules tosca renos eat clean diet and the advice from no more muffin top. I do a legs day, an arms day and a back and chest day. I took the things that made me work the hardest from each and put them together. i did legs 2 days ago and my butt still hurts when i sit down lol. You should pick up the eat clean diet she has lots of pictures and explains everything well it's a good place to start until you are comfortable.
