Protein Shakes/Bars

Right now I don't work out in a gym and just work out at home for 30 minutes 3-4 days per week. I use a set of free weights, a pull-up bar and my own body weight to do so. Would I benefit from extra protein from supplements on the days I work out or would it just be a waste of money until I get to the gym and start lifting heavy?

I haven't started using a gym yet for a proper workout because I want to build up my strength at least a bit at home first so I'm not going in there being barely able to make use of anything. I was thinking about eating a protein bar for breakfast just before I go for a run.

P.S. I already eat a lot of protein naturally, I eat a lot of grilled chicken and eggs simply because they make for tasty low-calorie meals.

You didn't mention if you had any particular goals, so I'm going to assume that you're trying to stay fit and build/maintain lean muscle. If this is right, then as long as you are getting at least 12-15g of protein within 30 minutes of working out (strength training), and you're getting at least 0.8g of protein per pound of bodyweight each day, then you should be fine.

Protein supplementation is often used by people who have very specific fitness/nutrition goals or people who have special diets. If you start lifting heavy weight, then you may want to consider consuming a little more protein after a workout, and specifically whey protein is a good source in this instance.
