Could I get the same results with just checking my pulse after I do whatever exercise I'm doing? Are the 'one-touch' HRMs any good?
Would most of you recommend the ones that use the chest strap?
I honestly have no clue what to do and even the cheaper HRMs aren't very cheap in my book. So I want as many opinions as possible to help me decide what I'm doing. ._.

You have to add it as a custom exercise. I use a HRM to get my burn and put it in custom. I don't think any of the MFP calculations on anything are close to what I burn.0 -

Theoretically, you'd get the same results. I bought one because it was awkward to stop mid-exercise. I wasn't sure I was counting correctly either.0 -

I got one at Target for $50. It's a strapless one (not as accurate but better than guessing). I didn't want to make a huge investment until I made exercise a habit and not a want.
Before that I found a HRM app for my iPhone. Worked ok, better than guessing still.0 -

I love my HRM, I have a Polar RC3GPS. It uses a chest strap. As I am a statistics freak, when I run I love to know how far, how fast, what my heart rate was, how much climb I have done. Stats for each km, stats for each lap, stats for the whole session. All shown in graph form as well as a display of my route wherever I run in the world. It even tells me how many cals I have burned. (Usually a lot more than MFP reckons.) The downside is it wasn't, cheap. Yes get a HRM the data they provide can be very useful. IMO get the dearest you can afford as the more you spend the better the quality of data.0
