I really like getting Vanilla chai tea at the local coffee shop...just wondering if there was a trick to making it yourself, and have it still kind of taste like the stuff you'd get from a coffee shop?

I'm not sure where you get your vanilla chai, but I am not a big fan of the Tazo chai from Starbucks. However, I am a BIG fan of Big Train Chai. Theirs is the best vanilla chai tea I have ever had. I found it at a locally owned small coffee shop, but you can order it online. I use Serious Chai.com.
This chai can be made with milk or water. I use skim milk, which is how my coffee shop makes it. However, I often use water to save some calories.

I live right near an Indian grocery and they've got probably 10 different types of chai tea.. might try looking for one around you? or try mixing your own chai blend? I know around christmas-time I saw a ton of recipes as ideas for homemade gifts.. I had this one bookmarked.. I've never tried it, just throwin' it out there.. Could add vanilla powder to the dry mix/stir a little vanilla paste into each cup as you make it/add a vanilla bean to sugar for vanilla sugar and use that to sweeten? Just ideas..
BASIC CHAI
What you'll need . . .
3/4 cup dry black tea (I just cut up some black tea bags we had around the house)
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
2 teaspoons ground ginger
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
Almond milk (or other)
Agave or honey
Mix dry ingredients together, store in something airtight. Shake the container so everything's evenly mixed (or else all the spices settle at the bottom) and use 1 tsp per 3/4 cup water.

I've used this recipe before, which makes a chai concentrate.

You keep it in the fridge and add it to hot water and milk. It has vanilla in the recipe, which you could tweak by adding more vanilla if it isn't enough for you. I would suggest adding a little vanilla to the milk you use, as that will probably carry the flavour really well, especially if you foam the milk up for that real latte feeling.0 -
Hi, I'm a huge chai fan myself. I'm not a huge fan of Starbucks chai, but since I don't drink coffee I will have one now and then. I have found and bought the Oregon Chai Tea in Wal-Mart Grocery Stores. They have the dry packets or the liquid. I've not used the liquid before, but the dry mix is wonderful. I have also ordered off their web site, and there are several different varieties.0
