I don't go out of my way to buy protein shakes and such, mainly because I don't know very much about them and I am afraid a sales rep would just give me whatever. But I was wondering what everyone else drinks or eats after a workout and why?
thanks

It has the proper mix of carbs and protein!

This has actually been studied. Yep, scientific studies support us drinking chocolate milk after workouts. Isn't science great?!
  • Agree on the chocolate milk. As a recovery food I like Cottage Cheese. Breakstones makes one called doubles and it has the fruit on one side and the cottage cheese on the other that you mix. All kinds of choices. Low cal and good protein. Of course I eat two at a time because they are small.

Water. I don't really believe in recovery things.

I drink a protein shake after I work out, yes, but not for recovery and not for the magical window of protein. But simply because it's a convenient time to drink it to supplement my protein. (Shake is mixed in water too)

I drank a cup of 1% milk after my workout last night because I didn't eat enough calories yesterday. Does it have to be chocolate milk? Is 1% OK? And what chocolate do you use? Curious...

Chocolate milk for me! If I am not able to have breakfast within 30 minutes or so, I drink a glass of chocolate milk.

Anything is fine- no worries! Use whatever chocolate (Hersheys, Ovaltine, etc). I just buy the chocolate milk from the store. I believe that it's 1 or 2%. If it fits within your calories... yay!

I don't usually eat after working out. If I do, I'll drink a protein shake, apples and peanut butter, cottage cheese if I have it. Anything with carbs + protein is good!

I guess it all depends on when you work out? I personally work out right after i get off work and then come home and eat my normal dinner. I get the correct amount of protein all day so i don't need to supplement it.

I DO, however, sip BCAAs during my workout. :)

Thanks! I used to be a huge milk drinker (16 oz glass or sometimes 2 of 2% milk every night with dinner!) before starting MFP. I have missed it so much, so when I read this it made me happy! I like chocolate milk but I like plain better, lol, it's just so refreshing to me. Now that I bumped my calories up a little (after losing 30 lbs) I have room for milk in my diet again! And that it's good for after my workout, which is usually in the evening, is really good news, thanks!
