So i just had my first appt with a new doc, and she was concerned about my weight. She told me to start out only walking 20 min every day and work my way up to one hour in six weeks. Along with a diet change. Now...before i hurt my back i was running and lifting weights....i feel like only walking 20 min isnt enough...but she told me it is. Any opinions?

Your doctor has told you to work up from there, not just walk 20 minutes a day for the rest of your life.

Increasing your exercise slowly will give your body time to adjust so that you do not re-injure yourself. One of the biggest issues with exercise is that people throw themselves into new routines and get injured from lack of knowledge or overtraining.

Once you are walking for an hour, you can start thinking about developing a similar way of increasing other kinds of activities.

Trust your doctor. I would agree with concordancia, this is not permanent and you need to let your body adjust to the changes. Just like with the weight loss, you can't expect quick results because that won't be healthy. Slow and steady! Be patient.
