HI There,
Can anyone help me, i have been working out since January last year, my fitness has come a long way i can now say i am quite fit at this stage, i found last year that if i ate anything even 2 hours before working out i would get a bad stitch so i got into a routine of working out after i dropped the kids to school at around 9am and eating after my workout, this worked perfect for me for a long time but the last couple of months i am getting some really bad stitches on and off some days i don't get a stitch at all, someone suggested i try eating something small at least an hour before i work out so i started doing that, thought it had helped but then stitch started coming back again, basically it doesn't seem to make a difference anymore if i eat or not i can still get a stitch that cripples me, it makes it so hard to finish my workout, having to pause it and try get rid of the stitch, it's always on my right hand side too or across the top part of my stomach.
I am sure it's not my breathing i really don't know what i can it's really annoying me now, can anyone help?
TIA

It's got nothing to do with food. A side stitch is usually from not breathing deeply from your gut and/or hunching forward so your diaphragm is compressed. Food goes in your stomach and isn't the answer to every question although you'd often think so from the advice around here.
If you're getting these while running or doing cardio work on standing up tall and taking long deep breaths. Sometimes putting your hands over your head will ease it.0 -
I get them on my ride side about 3 miles into my run. I usually just refocus my breathing - in thru my nose for 2, out through my mouth for 2 and occasionally will run with my right arm above my head. Sometimes takes a good half mile to clear up.
I don't eat before I run so I know it's not that. P,us, stomach is on the left, not the right ;-) lol0 -
thanks :-) i will try the putting my arms above my head and see if that works and re-look at my breathing although i really thought i was breathing properly unless i got distracted and lost focus on it or something - will make a note to watch my breathing tonight when i go to my boxercise class and see what happens - thanks :-)0

Make sure your diet has enough nutrition in it. Low calorie doesn't always mean healthy, so make sure you are getting the nutrients you need and that will help reduce the frequency. If you lift your arm above your head, that will reduce the pain and help it subside. That's an old cross-country track tip that works.0

thanks i'm pretty sure my diet is farily ok right now, my diary is open feel free to have a look, but i generally eat plenty of fruit and veg, i cook from scratch nearly all my meals which all contain plenty of veg in them, i've switched to brown rice from white (although my husband made lovely coconut rice today with white rice i couldn't resist), and switched to brown pasta i try to eat around 5 smaller meals a day, i add almonds in with low fat, fat free yogurt and blueberries most days, try to eat spinach raw most days (am out of it at the min need to go shopping), try to eat as much protein as i can - i think i'm doing good with my food :-)0
