Am I crazy... or is my bf's crossfit instructor crazy? My boyfriend is 6'5" and 284 lbs looking to drop about 15 lbs by summer time. His crossfit instructor said he should keep his calories under 2,000. To me, that's nuts (but what do I know). He's a muscular guy with some padding (obviously) but in no way fat. He does crossfit training for about an hour at least 3x a week.

So who's crazy here lol?

I'm 5'10" 210 and under 2000 would either kill me or those around me...

It's possible, and I've done it twice.

I'm 6'4" - started out this last time at 280+ lbs and went to about 1900-2100 cals a day. Started by doing C25k then more weights at gym. Then added CrossFit.

Previously about 7 years ago I was over 300 lbs and did a diet where I was 1500 cals a day and got down to 250.

    So yeah, it's possible.

That number might not be valid for your guy. His nutritionist show show him how they calculated his Basal Metabolic Rate and why they chose that particular number for his daily goal.

I like the food and exercise diary here b/c it projects what your weight will be 5 weeks out.

The instructor is crazy. I'm about 8 inches shorter than your husband AND 100lbs less in weight, and I eat anywhere from 2100-2600 calories a day on a cut.

I'm 6ft5 and the lowest I have ever gone is 1950 cals a day. I felt dizzy, couldn't exercise properly and lost muscle mass as well as fat.

I now eat 2500 cals on a cut and 2900 cals for maintenance at 200lbs although my LBM is quite low at about 165-170lbs.

I am 5 11 and 200 Lbs and I have done 1400 calories in the past with workout. This is usually done to jumpstat rapid loss but it is not sustainable and I would guess the instructor would recommend a gradual increase with time

Going back over my nutritionist's notes, they determined that my BMR was such that it would be about 3014.5 kcal/day to maintain my weight and that going down to 2300-2500/day would allow me to lose the weight that I wanted.

That I'm below that even is a personal decision and my brother has told me several times I should eat more protein...

Again, talk to a nutritionist, not a trainer at a gym :)

Is that NET calories (i.e. calories eaten minus calories burned)? That at least would put it somewhere within reason, though still too low. If he's talking just about calories consumed then that seems absurd to me.

Many of these instructors are not as expert as they claim to be. When in doubt, see a licensed healthcare professional.

It sounds low. I'm 6'5 250 and mfp sets my calorie goal around 2600 to lose a pound a week. I am losing 4-5 pounds a week but i started with plenty to lose.

his crossfit instructor obviously have no knowledge in the fitness and health industry. he should be shot for suggesting 2k and less cal for such a big guy like your bf.

this is simply the reason why i lost respect for the fitness industry because anyone can call themselves health coaches and instructor and not have a single knowledge about the human anatomy and exercise science. the LA FITNESS i go to have terrible trainers and its ashame.
