Ever have to cancel a date for a fake-sounding reason?

I just had to cancel a date with a guy for a reason that is 100% true but I know sounds 100% made up. I feel bad, but I'm sure he thinks he's getting stood up. This would have been our first date, so even worse.

What did I cancel for you ask?

Well, at lunch today, was I walking up (yes, up), some cement stairs in the building stairwell.... and I slipped on my sandal and fell. During the fall, my toe got skinned and jammed into the cement stair - and my toenail (which has a tendency to get ingrown) cut THROUGH my toe. It hasn't stopped bleeding for an hour, and we were supposed to meet in an hour for coffee.

See, sounds completely made up right? I feel bad and kept apologizing and already set up another date, but still. Ah. I'm a clutz.

Anyone else ever done something simliar, or gotten canceled on for a fake sound but potentially legit reason?

Have to cancel occasionally because of work (we get a sample call, we stay at work until it's done and it can take several hours to arrive then 6-8 hours to run) I try to tell them ahead of time that this is part of my job (unless it's a blind date, then I make sure that my set up person knows so they can explain) and I always am sure to say that I would like to reschedule and give an exact date (ie I will say "I really do want to get together, can we reschedule for tomorrow at 6pm for drinks at Chili's?"- I generally pick the same time, place, and activity just a different day)
But in your case, just tell him you were injured at work (no need to go into detail) you need to receive treatment (because you do really need to get that looked at if the nail went through the toe and is still bleeding) then ask if you can reschedule for a different day (be sure to be specific about the date/time so he knows you're not blowing him off)
