Polar FT1 Questions

Ok the constant beeping when reading my heart rate is driving me insane. Can it be stopped? Second question is I strapped it on today watching TV and its changing the HR reading every few seconds. Here's the last 5 readings taken in I'd guess 30 seconds- 72 70 68 70 67. Huh? Is this normal for the reading to be jumping like that. Lying flat it also showed me 58 and 70 in a one minute time frame. I'm confused!

    Anyone? Even input based on your own HRM. I'm really hoping I haven't wasted my cash on a dud:-)
