Ok so today was my 30th day of p90x. So I got on the scale, took my measurements and pictures. The scale was first. A 3.6 pound gain. I cried. Screamed....Almost said screw it all.
Then I took my measurements and pictures. The crying stopped. The measurements don't show much. 2 inches off my stomach and a half inch gain in my thighs. Arms stayed the same. So did hips. Calves lost half an inch.
I should mention that I have the dreaded saggy mom belly so I take the measurements on my stomach in 3 different places. At the navel (an inch lost), an inch above the navel (another inch) and an inch below (stayed the same)
But HOLY COW! The pictures......
The pictures put a huge smile on my face. HUGE! Like I was dancing in my underwear in my dinning room huge. I am starting to see my stomach tighten up. My butt is higher (thank god because during phase one that f***** was slapping me in the legs during plyo), the cellulite on my thighs is decreasing and my legs are starting to look toned. The best part.....MY BOOBS ARE HIGHER!!!!
My BMI went from 25.85 to 24. So obviously the gain isn't a fat gain, it's a muscle gain right?
Is it possible to figure out the fat lose to muscle gain ratio with all this information? I obviously lost some fat and put on some muscle, but I would like to know how much if possible.
I know a pound is a pound is a pound. 1 pound of fat weighs the same as a pound of muscle. I also know that muscle takes up less space than fat so we don't need to get into that debate.

Are you sure you mean BMI? BMI doesn't go down with a weight gain unless you grow taller too. You definitely lost some fat if your measurements are going down0

well there are ways to figure it out...some easier than others. The most accurate is if you would have done hydrostatic weighing before the program and now. It would show you exactly your fat mass, lean mass, etc. then compared to know so you'd know that to a "T".
Unless you are a professor in an ex phys dept at a university or work as an exercise physiologist doing research you probably don't have access to that lol.
The simple method is to get your bodyfat tested.
Since you are new to the program i would guess you are enjoying what they call in the bodybuilding world "newb gains". It's the phenomenon of losing fat and gaining muscle at the same time. It doesn't work like that forever so press hard and keep going and enjoy.
I have to kill myself for a 2-5 pound muscle gain a year so enjoy adding lean mass easily for the time being! Also keep in mind the more muscle you have the more muscle glycogen/water retention plays a role0 -

means your weight will fluctuate more, more or less water being held by your body.0 -

I use an online calculator which I know isn't the most accurate, but there are a few sites that have you input your measurements too not just your height and weight.0 -

The short answer is no.
However, I don't think it really matters. If you are looking and feeling great then who cares? The gain is probably more likely to be overall water retention throughout your body unless you have been binging recently. Your measurements have improved I would guess because you have lost water and glycogen at specific sites as well as fat (which will be governed by your genetic disposition.0
