Hey MFP peeps,
Sadly,my grandfather passed away yesterday and I will be travelling out of province this weekend for his funeral. It will only be 3 days but I would like to stay on track while I am there. Any tips for planning meals and staying within your calories while away from home? I’ve only just started tracking calories a little over a week ago and don’t want to get of track so early in my weight loss journey. Thanks!

I am very sorry to hear of the passing of your grandfather. Please know you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.

My suggestion is to bring your own meals. Have a tupperware container for each meal and that way you have portion controls. That's one really helpful way to do it. Otherwise, if you will be eating out, I have a diabetes book that lists the majority of restaraunts and the meals they serve including calories, carbs, sugar, et cetera. Hope this is helpful.

What works for me is being mindful of what I eat. If I eat a large heavy breakfast I may skip lunch or just have a yogurt. I try to balance myself through the day. It reduces the stress of being too meticulous at a very trying time. Sorry for your loss.

So sorry for your loss. My suggestion is, before you eat something think "would I eat this at home?". Take some healthy snakcs (which you know the calories of) and some fruit, and steer clear (if you can) of fried or cheese-heavy dishes. If you can't refuse these without offending someone, then take a very small portion. If challenged just say"I can't eat big meal at the moment" - I doubt anyone will push you further.

Its difficult at such times because family will want to nurture you through food, but if you try to go with lighter options you should be OK.
