Eating within calories and seem to be gaining weight

Hey guys,

This may be a stupid question but I am generally asking this for a heads up. I have gained about 50 pounds in a year, due to a lovely double dose of prednisone (ugh), but have been back on track to losing weight for a little over two weeks. It seems this week, I have gained a little weight. I have been following my calorie allowance and have gone a little over for two days, but not by a lot. I know I haven't been drinking much water the past few days but I haven't been drinking alcohol or sugary beverages (other than diet coke a few days ago). What is causing this?

I do admit that I don't exercise a lot because I'm constantly running from place to place. I have play rehearsal most days and my car recently crapped out and i have to buy a new one, so I spend my spare time going to dealerships. I take the stairs most days at work and try to keep active when I can.

Any advice? I've lost 12 pounds in two weeks, and though I know it is deemed unhealthy, the weight came on fast and I am not starving myself at all.

Thank you for reading!

I don't know how long you give yourself between weigh-ins, but for accuracy you may want to do it once per week, at the same time of day (say, Monday mornings). In one day and day-to-day your weight fluctuates pretty significantly. You're probably not gaining back the weight (unless you've gone over your TDEE by more than 3,500 calories).

Hormonal fluctuations can wreak havoc on the scale (I see the scale go up and down througout the month, and even throughout the day). It can go up if you eat a ton of sodium. It can go up if you're not drinking enough water. It can go up for a million reasons. It's called water weight, and you shouldn't freak too much about it.

Make smart choices, don't eat crap and drink lots of water and see what happens next week. Your diary isn't open so I have no idea what you eat or how much so nobody can say that you're starving yourself. 12 pounds in 2 weeks is a lot. You can't expect to lose like that every week. Take a deep breath and just keep doing what you're doing and check back in next week.

How much is a little? Since you went over a couple of days it could be extra waste.

If this continues for a few weeks then you may need to adjust, but one week with a little gain isn't something to worry too much about.

Most of that 12 pounds is probably water weight honestly.

From there, water will fluctuate, so it may seem like you're gaining at times. This is just water, not fat.

Are you still taking your medication? If so, you'll need to factor that into your calculations.

The fact that water weight has gone down initially means you have indeed lost fat as well, so that is good. So, the moral of this story is to realize humans are mostly water, and if water changes even slightly, it can have large affects on our weight.

Continue what you are doing, sounds like you are on the right path.

I was on prednisone when i was a kid, prednisone makes your body retain a lot of water, so just watch your sodium levels, and drink Lots of water.

Thanks for the response. I weigh myself daily but only log once a week.
