Treadmill versus elliptical

Hey everyone,

I work out at snap fitness. I try to go 4-5 times per week. I start on either a treadmill or elliptical, and then do a round of resistance training. According to the calories burned on the machines, I burn more calories in 15 minutes on the elliptical than I do on the treadmill. I know that these are estimates, and that they probably say I burn more than I actually do. At this time I do not have HRM, so until I get one I use the numbers given to me by the machines. My question to all of you is this: can you help me compare the treadmill to the elliptical? Is one better than the other? Does it seem accurate that I could burn the same calories (or more) in half the time on the elliptical? Should I use the treadmill instead because that would give me a longer cardio workout? While my ultimate goal is to be healhty, my current goal is weight loss, so I want to use whichever one will benefit me more.

Thanks!

I have a HRM and have found that if I run on the treadmill I burn a little more than the elliptical. If I walk on the treadmill, the elipitical is the winner.

I was reading yesterday that there is some science coming out that its better to do quick, rapid bursts or cardio at or near max levels for short times (30-60 seconds) than it is to go for a long time. I am reading up on that now, just thought I would throw that out for you.

No way to tell without an average HR for the workout.

    (((AGE x .074) - (WEIGHT x .05741) + (HR x .4472) - 20.4022) x TIME)/4.184 = Total Calories burned
