They're both about genetics. I'm a bit confused.

They both are about genetics! You're right Arielle... The genetic manipulation they're doing to your 'healthy' vegetables most notably. How much is true... I don't know? But I think it's something that's interesting!

I have no way of knowing if the first one is correct. I can say it's from a Canadian based paper. :)

huh yea the mice thing was a little weird but I do worry about thew GMOs and I try to look for labels that say 'No GMOs" but like it said there's no law saying it has to be labeled. :ohwell: We should all start growing our own vegetables!!!

The mice thing actually made me snicker when I read it this morning but I do believe it's legit. Some pretty weird stuff goes on in the food industry...

I agree with growing our own veggies! Here's to self-sufficiency!

I can't remember where I found it, maybe in the Food Inc or when Oprah was interviewing Michael Polan, but you know the stickers on fruit and vegetables? There are codes for grown naturally with pesticides (meaning GMO free), organic, coming from Mexico and other nations, and GMO produced stuff.

I know that tomatoes have been injected with fish dna in the past for something...can't remember what though. There are a lot of foods like that. Like the soybean resistant to round up? Yeah...good stuff.

Here is a website that explains some of it:

Hmm... I'm not sure how I feel about the doomsday claims about GMOs... I get the idea that there's a lot more to consider than just what goes on in the petri dish, but I think I'm more concerned about stuff like carcinogenic preservatives in my food than whether or not my canola oil comes from the seeds of a plant that made antibodies to a pest.

Fair enough. :) I'm curious to see what the long term effects on the human body is going to be myself. But I probably won't be around by the time the real damage settles in.

Is this an American site? Strangely enough the only PLU it recognizes (I'm a cashier at a food store - I know the PLUs for pretty much every vegetable/fruit we carry heh) is 4011! Good old bananas! HAHA

Edit: Ah! It was formed in the UK. :)

To me GMOs are scary only because we DONT know the long term affects... or even if there will be any... And I really hate that they dont have to tell you if it is GMO or not...

AH! Sorry! I just quickly did a search and found what looked to be a decent site for PLU codes. I know there are more out there. And I think too that here in the US if the PLU starts with an 8, that means that it is GMO.

This is the thing for me too. A soybean resistant to Round Up? The chemical that kills plants and such? That makes ground unusable to grow things on for a while? Not pest resistant...Round Up resitant. Meaning, you can spray Round Up on it to kill the pests and the soybeans don't die. So are we getting round up in our foods made with soy? Of course right now we don't know the long term effects but I can't see how there wouldn't be any.
And again, I drink soymilk. I eat edamame. And other soybased products. It just baffles the mind how the FDA would ever allow a plant to be produced like that. I guess because it feeds the masses.

I second that! Grow your own from organic, heirloom seed and you never have to buy veggies or seeds again.
