Too many calorie burning calculators!

I went to the gym today, and did the elliptical and a stationary bike. Both for 35 minutes. For the elliptical, the machine said I burned 340 calories for the 35 minutes. MFP said I burned 572. Another calculator at healthstatus.com said I burned 722. For the the stationary bike, the machine said I burned 187 calories. MFP said I burned 445 and so did the healthstatus.com calculator. This is so confusing! I entered what the machines said I burned since the machines knew how fast I was going on them.
So, which is the best way to enter calories burned?

Get a HRM with a chest strap. That way you know exactly what you burned.0

Yeah, but I don't have the money to buy those special little calorie things.0
