Who wants to settle an argument?

I have read that if you do strength/weights before cardio it helps you get to the fat burning quicker so that you don't need to run/walk/cross train/ cycle for as long to get the same desired affects! Think there was an article in the Guardian xxx0

I don't think it matters as long as you lift when you feel strongest. I am in the gym at 5:30 am so I do cardio first. I feel more awake and alert after so I lift then. If I tried to lift first I would drop something on my head.0

When I was lifting instead of HIT training, we always lifted first, then did the cardio. Just so we wouldnt wear out our muscles before cardio. But thats just what I was told0

My husband and I were talking about this last night. I did a little reading online and most points of view suggest doing weights/resistance training before cardio. Tomorrow I am going to switch my order and see if I notice any difference in the next few weeks.0

Strength training before cardio. Strength training uses glycogen as the primary fuel source. If you do cardio first then your glycogen stores will be compromised or depleted. A 10 min cardio warm up is probably okay but often times it's pointless if you are splitting your body parts or doing an upper one day and lower the next. How would walking on a treadmill or jogging help warm-up the upper body?0

Strength before cardio, gives you more energy for lifting. In my mind’s eye I believe I am shaping my body then I do cardio and it burns off where I have been shaping...if that makes any sense. Hey but it’s been working!0

Clearly I was 100% wrong! Haha, thanks guys.
To be clear I tend to mix gym workouts in with other at-home workouts, so most days I tend to do a mix of strength and cardio intervals but do more intensive cardio sessions at the gym. But I will definitely now be keeping this in mind and starting my gym workouts in the weights section! Thanks again everyone.0 -
Define cardio?
If you do a quick bout of cardio to start your warm-up before you lift, it's different than doing 45 mins on the elliptical and then lifting.
If you are doing a lot of cardio, then lifting, you may be hurting your progress because you won't have a full tank of gas to devote to your strength training.
^this
Also it will be easier to injure yourself lifting, if you're already worn out from cardio.0 -
Strength training first then cardio for the energy to do the lifting properly to start. It also aids the body in eliminating lactic acid if you do aerobic exercise after weight training. This lessens the inflammation after your workout by allowing the body's circulation to actually be kept elevated speeding the recovery time after working out.0

It's not really going to matter that much. That being said...
Just do what he says!0 -
my trainer always said for you to do both at the same time is really helpful. I would so three mins of fast cardio and then do three reps of strength and then 5 mins of cardio he said that those kind of burst help the body burn more! I do cardio then strength one day then vice versa the next!
Your trainer has you doing HIIT, but doing "strength" training during your rest periods.
Get your money back.
There is nothing wrong with this plan, just because it doesn't fit into how you are defining HIIT.0 -
i have strength days, and i have cardio days. I don't combine them anymore. I'm doing stronglifts 3x a week and i can barely walk by the time i'm done with them let alone hopping on a treadmill or elliptical. i tried doing zumba once after my strength training, and thought iwas going to pass out.0

I would think it also depends on which cardio and which strength, right?
My 'sets' are like Jillian Michaels sets, cardio-strength-abs. I do more cardio though (cause I like it)
example:10-12 on treadmill, then jumping jacks, squats, weights, abs, repeat 3x, then finish with 10-12 on treadmill.
I honestly think that you will find both sides of the argument will have statistics backing it up.
In the long run, doesn't matter, you both will shed. Right?0
