Shin Splints

Hi fitness gurus,
I have started running again (starting off with walk/runs) after a year long hiatus. I am finding though that my shins are KILLING me while running and are a little sore after too. I am walk/running and am actually finding they hurt less while running, as opposed to walking.
I am also breaking in to wearing Newton running shoes (which help with a midfoot strike), not sure if that has anything to do with it or not. Am going to try my old shoes today to see if it's any better--I know the Newtons take some getting used to (although other than the shin issue, I LOVE the way I run in them).
Any ideas/thoughts/suggestions?
THANK YOU!
