I've used a personal trainer before. It's not necessary if you do your homework on working out, but it could be a great start to understand some of the equipment at the gym more. I don't recommend a regular use of a personal trainer, but maybe once a month wouldn't hurt. They can evaluate where you are and give you a workout plan to help you achieve your goals. Then you can check back in with them to track progress and maybe switch up your routine before you plateau. I've seen them from $40 an hour and upwards of $60. My gym has specials sometimes and it gets down to about $30 an hour, but you have to buy like a 12 hour minimum. You can probably search reputable fitness sites such as bodybuilding.com or livestrong.com for some good ideas on workout plans. I read a ton of magazines and am on the internet constantly so I'm not in need of a personal trainer. I also keep a log book for each day at the gym. I write down my routine for each muscle group and note what I'm doing, such as incline barbell press = 180lbs. Then as my weight goes up I scratch through the 180 and put 190 (or whatever). I also do this with my ab workouts and cardio. You can then monitor your progress, and with the log you always know what exercise is next and what weight to use, saving time and aggravation. I bought one of those mini composition books from Wal Mart. They're less than a buck and I clip a pen to it.0
