Some advice/help needed

Hi,

Had a few questions. Here is my day2day life,

Go college in the morning till evening where I sit on computer doing assignments, when I get back, I work as a food delivery driver for Dominos. I also do insanity work out most days and I am on 4th week now.

Questions
1) What do I class myself as? Sedentary? Lightly active?

I just sit around most of the time in college or even at home. I do walk around a bit on my job but being a driver, I sit around during job a bit too. I do a bit of running and insanity sometime during the day. So, do I eat sedentary calories + exercise calories or lightly active calories + exercise calories?

2) I have heard the formula used by mfp can overestimate/underestimate calorie needs e.g. too much cals for fat people and not enough cals for lean people. Is this true?

I mean, my setting is currently in sedentary, it shows 1310 calories to eat a day. I am fat type of person so if I take of 100 calories due to overestimation, that's 1200 calories is starvation territory isn't it?

Thanks for any help in advance

  • I would say that you should list yourself as being lightly active and see if that changes. When I started this journey I weighed 179 lbs. and I was seeing a dietitian. I saw that dietitian for 3 visits because that's all my insurance would pay for at one time and I felt that i had a better understanding of healthy eating. Anyway, I'm 5' 6" and my dietitian told me not to eat less than 1400 calories a day so I'm to stay between like 1400-1600 calories a day. My advice to you though is to check with your doctor to see how many calories a day that you should be eating at the most and least and stick to that. I've been at this journey since December 2012 and I've lost a total of 7 lbs. I hope that this is of some help to you!

if all you did was lay on your chubby backside all day watching television, I'd say you were sedentary. Anything above that counts as lightly active or more! If you're doing Insanity and running, you're NOT sedentary. You're at a minimum "Lightly Active."

I would go with sedentary and eat ack all exercise cals, if after 4-6 weeks you feel very hungry increase by 100-200 cals a day.

Alternatively, insanity suggests al least 1800 cals anyway - but then you wouldn't eat exercise cals back
  • First if all, 12-1300 is way way way too low for you, unless you are a 4' 11" inch girl, which I don't think you are.

Second, you need to post more info about your current weight, height, etc.

I am a woman, moderately active, do cardio every day and weights 3x/week and eat 16-1800/ day. Currently I am losing at a pretty consistent rate if 2 lbs/week. I have been stepping up my calories every two weeks to get to the right level.

Look up the posts about bmr and tdee and go from there.

Are you guys getting enough fiber? If not I would try that and dairy if your diet allows them. Both help you to become more "regular". :)

if you spend more than 3 periods during a normal day of at least 2+ hours seated,, then you are sedentary. i would say lightly active from what your saying...
but that being said , i was told by a coach that most college students are classified as sedentary, if you have a pedometer, that will help, i thought i was SOOOO active, till i got my fitbit, zip and realized that most days i was only around 3k steps, active is 7k or more
