Wedding dance help

Hi all,

This may be a strange request but I'm really in need of some help.

My step son in getting married next month and he has asked me to dance a groom/mother dance with him. We selected the song by Paul Simon, She Loves Me Like a Rock. He lives about 6 hours away so we can't practice before hand. And the song isn't a typical slow shuffle your feet song.

I am so nervous about being in the center of attention in front of a very large group (7 bridesmaid type wedding). I've signed up for 3 basic lessons with Arthur Murray but not sure if that will help since my son won't be with me.

I was wondering if anyone knows of any web based dance videos that may be I could look at and then send to him?

Thanks in advance any ideas.

  • Hey, it's great that you're taking some classes with Arthur Murray. That will really help build your confidence with dancing. When you take the classes with them, ask them what type of dance style they're teaching you (Personally, I think Swing would be great with your song, but you could also do Rumba.) Then you can easily go to YouTube and search for dance tutorials on that style (i.e. Beginning Single Time East Coast Swing Dance Tutorials) and you'll find a lot of free videos. However, it can be very difficult to learn to dance from a video, especially if your son doesn't have a lot of dance experience. Are you and your son going to be in the same location before the wedding (even if it's just 1-2 days before)? I would highly recommend finding a dance studio in the area where he is and taking 1 or 2 "crash course" lesson/s together. Even having just one lesson will really help you move together well for that special moment.

I'm a dance studio owner in Orange County, CA and we teach mother/son dances all the time. You'll have a blast!
